"Satan" Raises Good Sum
For Old People's Home

is acknowledged to have been proven
by the presentation of this play. The
leading character was presented by

CARRIGAN FUNERAL
HELD HERETUESDAY
Prominent Lumber Dealer Who
Had Been in Business in
Omaha for Fourteen
Years.
Edmond B. Carriitan died Sunday
afternoon at li is home, Daven
port street.
Mr. Carrigau was born in Olcott,
N. Y in 18(i?. llis parent were
Patrick and Mary Carrigan, both of
whom came troin Ireland, hdmoiiu
was one of five :hildren.
At 17 years of age, Mr. Carriaan
came west, going first to Kansas City.
Having; arrived there, he looked about
for employment, and also made ar-

rangements to continue his studies in
the night schools. His first position
was secured with the Western Rail
way Weighing and Inspection bureau
in Kansas City, and he remained in
the employ of that company for three
years. At the end of that time he re
signed and accepted a position with
tne Central Loal and Coke company
of Kansas City. In the interests of
this concern he 6rst came to Omaha,
and this association was continued up
until the time (some fourteen years
ago) when he organized his own com
pany, the E. B. Carigan crfhipany,
wholesale dealers in coal, City Na
tional Bank building.
Mr. Carngan was deenly interested
in the affairs of Omaha, as was evi
denced by his serving on the traffic
bureau and house committee of the
Commercial club. He was also a
member of the Happy Hollow club.
At the time of his death he was an
active worker in the Christian Science
church and had served at different
tunes as a director in both the First
and Second churqhes of Christ, Sci
entist, oi tins city.
Mr. Carrigan is survived by his
mother, Mrs. Mary, Carrigan, of Ol
cott, N. Y.; by three brothers, Charles

Council Should Decide On
Material Used, Butler Says
The entire council should decide
what material to be used in street
oaving and not the department, Com
missioner Butler told city commis
sioners. The question was raised by
Commissioner Jardine, who asked
what material he should order for a
street paving job. After consider
able debate, Butler was directed to
bring in a resolution as to what he
considered a proper method of pro
cedure. Man in Navy Asks His
Taxes Be Set Aside
Joseph F. Kramolisch, 4126 J, in
active service in the navy since April
10, asks the city council of Omaha to
help make provision to pay his taxes
without selling his property here. The
grounds of his petition set forth in a
letter to the city commissioners are
that his wife is ill and has to undergo
an operation, and he is unable to pay
his taxes. He has, he says, been in
the navv four vears orior to his re
cent resumption of services.
Council Orders Unclaimed
Street Warrants Canceled
The council directed the city comp
troller to cancel all warrants for
which no claim had been filed for
opening and widening of atreets prior
to Vs)i, and directed that the special
warrants revert back to the original
funds and the general fund Warrants
to the general sinking fund.
A. R. Hansen Buys Big
Ranch Near Chadron
Alfred R. Hansen of the Lincoln
Inn has purchased a ranch of 1.840
acres in the Pine Ridge park, Dawes
county, from the Kloke Investment
company. This ranch is located just
ten miles south of Chadron and abmit
fifteen miles from the ranch Mr. Ca
vers purchased a short time ago.
It is Mr. Hansen's idea to erect two
or three sets of improvements on the
property and get several hundred
aires under cultivation. Altogether
there arc about 1,000 acres of the
very best of farm land.
Inasmuch as this is a great potato
country, Mr. Hansen will no doubt
supply his cafeteria with potatoes and
oilier winter vegetables from this
farm. For some time Mr. Hansen has
been figuring on getting hold of a
large block of land for this purpose.
The consideration is said to be in
the neighborhood of $35,000 and the
deal was handled through the Kloke
Investment company and Harry Cof
fee of Chadron.

William Rochefotd Dies
In an Omaha Hospital
William Rocheford, 43, pioneer resi
dent, died Monday night in a hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thurs
day at 9 i. m. at St. Patrick's Catholic
church. The body wit) be taken from
the family residence, 1920 South
Thirty-second street, at 8:15 a. m.
Burial will be at Holy Sepulcher
cemetery.
He was injured in an automobile
accident at Twenty-second and Leav
enworth streets four years ago, when
his father was killed. Locomotor
ataxia developed during the last few
years and a recent accident added to
his disabilities.
Surviving members of the . family
are: Mrs. Celia Rocheford, mother;
Mrs. W. S. Stryker, sister; Arthur,
Fred, Elmer and Ector, brothers.
Mr. Pocheford was interested in
the Douglas Shoe company and was
engaged in the building contracting
business for many years.
High Water in Missouri
Causes Guards to Move
The rise of the stage of water in
the Missouri river has driven to higher
land the squad of soldiers guarding
the east approach to the Union Pa
cific bridge. Formerly the men had
their camp on the river bank, near
the east end of the bridge. The rise
in the river has flooded the bottom
and the camp has been moved onto
the grade that years ago was used
as the wagon road to the bridge.
While the boys on guard at the
Union Pacific bridge have not made
any complaint, it is said that they are
in need of a table on which they can
put books and writing material and
several chairs for their tents.
Tuesday the Bride of Myi-

enthusiasm for the Red Cross week,
June 18 to 25, when all the chanters
in the United States will work as

their families.
As it is next to impossible for any
one to see the president or secretary
of war, because of the efforts to pro
tect them from possible harm, ex

chairman of the war council; Ian Mal

were some of the speakers who
brought the war home to the Red
Cross representatives.
So impressive were some of the
speeches that one man broke down
and was forced to leave the room.
"We will give until it hurls us in
stead of waiting until half of our boys
arc killed to wake up to the serious
ness of the war. The sooner we give
all we can and send our men to
France the quicker the war will end,"
is the opinion of eastern workers.
Wattles Back Wednesday.
G. W. Wattles, chairman of the fi
nance committee of the Omaha chap
ter, will return today from the
east and will make plans at once for
the Red Cross finance campaign in
Omaha. "We cxnect to bring some
big man to Omaha for the opening
day ot the campaign. 1 tried to urge
William Howard Taft to come, hut he
said, 'You don't need me if yQ,u got
30.000 members in a week.'".
Mr. Dietz will name a committee to
the Denver conference, June 7, at
once.
So great has the work at the local
headquarters grown that it will be
necessary to employ a paid director.
It is also possible that Nebraska will
have a director so that we will not
have to refer chapters being formed
to Chicago or Denver.
The ambulance company will toon
be organized, as more than twice
enough men have applied.
Mr. Dietz will appoint a special am
bulance committee, composed of lev
en clnrlrvrs. at oner.
While in Washington Mrs. C. T.
Kountze and Mr. Uietz had a corner
ence with Mabel Boardman, who has
sriven Mrs. Kountze much valuable in
formation about the women's work in
the war. Mrs. Kountze will return
today.
