(Hll'MiO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
July and December Wheat Open Two to
Four Cents tawer.
Chicago. May 18. Assertions that large
quantities of wheat on the Pacific coast had
been bought for export and would be
rushed overland to the Atlantic led today
to a decided upswing In prices of future
deliveries here. The market cloaed strong.
9c net higher, with July at 2.28 and
September at $2.06. Corn gained 2c,
oaie l01c and provisions 12316o to 36c.
It waa apparent almost from the outset
that the wheat market had overcome to a
great extent the extreme pessimism dis
played during the previous daya of thia
week. ' Kver stneo new buying of future
deliver tes had been restricted the bear aide
of the trading seemed until today to have
a virtual monopoly of attention.
Declines, however, had been so drastic
lhat short sellers this morning grew more
and more cautious, especially aa premiums
for cash wheat, that la, wheat for Immedi
ate delivery, had a tendency to harden and
there hos been a decrease of 830,000 bushels
In stocks at Minneapolis this week, cont
oured with only 60.000 bushels falling off
a vear ago. It was not before the receipt of
news about exporters being active on the
Pacific coBst, howover, that the market
Jumped upward In good earnest.
Scnrrlty of offerings became a notable
feature of the wheat market In the last
part of the day. Dry weather and crop
backwardness In the northern section of the
domestic winter belt attracted some atten
tion and so likewise did estimates that
Canadian heat acreage this season would
show a decrease compared with last year.
Gossip was current also that the seeded
areas of the Dakota and Minnesota indi
cated no material domestic spring crop gain
over 1916.
Favorable weather and crop news had
only a transient bearish effect on com.
Failure of cash premiums' to weaken despite
the fact that the planting season waa al
most finished acted soon as much more than
an offset. Besides, there were reports of car
scarcity and of urgent home and foreign de
mand for corn products.
Oats developed independent strength ow
ing to free buying on the part of house
with seaboard connections. It waa said
export isales of oats in all positions aggre
gated 2,000,000 bushels.
Firmness of ths markets for coarse grain
and for hnaa lifted the value of provisions.
The fact waa noted, too, that shipments of
meats were being made en a large acaie

DIN'S REVIEW OF TRADK.
Regular Business Hold Ip Kemarkablj
Well.
New Tork. May 18. Dun's Review tomor
row will say:
Regular business holds up remarkably well
considering Its many hindrances with retail
trade In some1 sections responding to Im
proved weather and grain crop prospects
u nmr. nrnmlalnir. Yet the Period Of
low temperature was too prolonged to make,
'best results in spring distribution powelble.
and the accumulations or niercnannisa
reflect to some extent the Influence of the -extreme
prices. While there la still full
employment of labor and wage advance
have continued, the tendency toward
economy among consumers la spreadtng and
this la evident not only In foodstuffs, but
also in dry goods and footwear. The leu.
aened buying of necjssitlea. however, has
not yet lowered costs , perceptibly and in
many primary channels the large expend
turea for military supplies' act as a sus
taining factor. Pressure on moat of the
leading industrlea has increased rather than
slackened though in some quarters ordinal
demands are held in abeyance pending more
definite knowledge as to the requirements
of tho government; With strikes of minor
importance in certain branchee and more
skilled -hands needed than are available,
maintenance of manufacturing outputs is
In some cases impracticable, and operations
nearly everywhere continued hindred by
the difficulty in moving materials anil
products to points of destination.
