A paid clerk to relieve the re cording secretary, whose duties in be half of a large club in a metropolitan city are onerous, was another recommendation. She urged consolidation of depart ments, enlargement of committees, continuation of the club's work in educating foreign women and contin uation of educational moving pictures for children. The retiring nresident presented the club with a handsome water bottle. Submarine War Has Cut Down the Tea Trade (Corr.spond.nc. of Th. Assoclatsd Frsss.) Peking, April 18. CHANGES IN CONSTITUTION "The union and conservation of all arts la the watchword of the future," declared Mrs. W. G. Ure, retiring president of the Omaha Society of Fine Arts, which met Monday after noon at the Fontenelle for the last meeting of the year, marking the termination of eleven years of suc cessful work for the advancement of art in Omaha. "The destructive warfare has made artists and patrons of art feel that co operation is necessary in order to con serve not only food and clothing, but also art treasures for the benefit of future generations," said Mrs, Ure. Mrs. Ward Burgess, chairman of the exhibition committee, and Mrs. E. M. Morsman, the new president, were chosen as delegates to the Art Fed eration convention in Washington this month. An appeal was made by Miss Au gusta Knight of the University of Omaha art department that all pot tery, fancy glassware, silk draperies and art objects which the members usually discard be saved for the use of stilt life objects in the department at the university. Spend Large Sum. , The treasurer, Mrs. John R. Ring wait, reported the society had ex pended over $3,000 on art exhibitions this year, and that over $30,000 worth of pictures were in the Franco-Belgian art exhibit at the Auditorium this week. This is the last of ten for eign exhibits being shown in this country this year, and it would have been sent back to Europe had it not been for the submarine warfare. Mrs. R. Beecher Howell, chairman of the membership committee, re ported that 667 members are now en rolled in the society. Mrs. C. T. Kountze reported for the courtesy committee, Mrs. Edgar H. Smoking Habit Is Growing Among Girls in London (Corrnspondencs ot Ths Assoclst.d Prsss.) London, April 18. Attention has been directed to the growth of the smoking habit among women by the report of the official physician of a large munitions factory that he has found fourteen young women em ployes suffering from "smoker's heart." Some of them are quite young girls. "All of them," he says, "are women to be regarded naturally as potential mothers. There never was a time when babies were of such vital importance as today, yet at the very time we want strong and sturdy babies, children are likely to come into this world in a weak, weedy and rickety condition, paying the price for their mothers' devotion to tobacco." Smoking after lunch is now per mitted among the women workers in several of the most conservative gov ernment offices in London, and in other departments whore official per mission is lacking systematic smok ing among the women employes is winked at. In the offices of private firms and factories of alt kinds the same condition exists. A London newspaper says that many women workers admit smoking an average of a hundred cigarets weekly. An army surgeon who, in the last days of 1914. declared that ex cessive smoking among boys was the cause of so many men proving unfit lor general military service, has lust stated that "one of the greatest evils produced by the war is the growth of the smoking habit in women." French Soldier Carries His Record on Sleeve (Corrospondenc. of Th. Associated Press.) Paris, April 29. The French sol dier carries his whole military record on his sleeve. An inverted "V" high on the right sleeve means "wounded," and a new one is added for each ad dition. A "V" right side up on the same sleeve means "sent home on sick leave. The V on the left fleeve indicates length of service; one for the first year, and one for each succeeding six months. A new distinction, which is highly prized, has recently been created, a narrow horizontal band, meaning six months at Verdun," NEW PROSPERITY 1 IN TRENCH AREA' Floating Population of Soldiers Make Profits Large for Those Who Dare. CAFES DOT COUNTRYSIDE (Correspondencs of Th. Assoolated Prsss.) Behind the British Lines in Franc. April 27. When the tide of German invasion swept through Belgium and into France, thousands of the inhabit ants fled before it, leaving their prop, erty to the mercy of the invader. The tide was stemmed and made to ebb, but in its backward rush still more material damage was done, and now, after two years and more of trench warfare, the country behind the Brit ish lines consists of a broad belt of blackened and pitted fields, shattered woods and damaged buildings, where onre lay a region of agricultural peace and plenty. Vet it is surprising to find, amid all this apparent ruin, that the population is enjoying a prosperity as great, and in many cases greater, than in peace times. Many of the old inhabitants have gone, it is true, but a large propor tion have stayed behind, in spite of the perils and restrictions which prox imity to the trench area involve, and, though the bustle of war has put an end to many of their wonted daily avocations, starvation is far removed from the door even of the nearest dwelling place. The vast floating population of sol diers is the secret of the war zone's prosperity. The soldiers, men able , and willing to pay good currency for services rendered, have provided the remaining population with opportuni ties of which the people have not been slow to avail themselves. Though at any moment death may swoop out of the skies, claiming as its victim soldiers and civilian alike, , there is money to be earnd by those who care to run the risks, and work is to be had for the asking, at profits undreamed of in peace times. More over, the greater the risk, the greater the profit. Cafes Dot Country. Dotted all over the country and clustering closely together in the towns and villages are numerous cafes which sell the light Flemish beer and French wines in addition to supplying food and other forms of refreshment. These cafes do a flourishing trade, and the closer to the lines the better the trade and the higher the price. It Is true the trade is kept well in hand by the stringent measures of control enforced by the authorities. The sale of spirits is sternly suppressed and disobedience is punished by the sup pression of the house. Anywhere in the war zone in France a cup of coffee and an ome lette can generally be obtained at a reasonable cost, and many of the houses have notices in their windows announcing "bacon and chops" at moderate prices. Almost every house contains something for sale, ranging from a modest store of chocolate and picture postcards to the full stock-in-trade of a well-equipped village gen eral store. t Heedless of Cannon's Roar. Another very profitable occupation in the war zone is lace-msking. The women behind the northern part of the line make lace as good aa can be bought anywhere in the world. It can be obtained either in lengths for trimming purposes or made up in the form of daintv handkerchiefs, cans or aprons. All day they work at the windows of their cottages, old women and young girls, heedless of the guns which often thunder around them. The laces are eagerly bought by Brit ish soldiers mindful of their women folk at home, and often orders have to be placed weeks ahead. The prices charged leave a good margin for profit. Plenty ot other means of livelihood are open to any who care to take ad vantage of them. Road repairing ab sorbs the energies of every available man or boy, and for the women there is good money in washing or mend ing clothes. The British soldier is inclined to be particular about his wearing apparel, and the neatness oi the Frenchwomen's mending is a never-ending source of delight to him. then billetting brings in some good returns. Thousands of soldiers are billeted in houses and barns belong ing to the local population, and, though the presence of soldiers in their houses causes some inconveni ence, the people are far from show, ing any resentment. In addition to the rent paid them, other emoluments accrue from the sale of dainties and the performing of little services for the guests. The mayor of each com munity superintends the billeting and secures lair compensation tor ay damage done to property in the oc cupation of troops. That the work, ing arrangements are generally equit. able is shown by the popularity of the British soldier on all parts of the line. The local au thorities of Berneck, a tourist resort town in the Bavarian Alps, have an nounced that they must decline to provide accommodations for visitors in their districts this year. There is no room for visitors, says the an nouncement, and in order to avoid disappointment intending travelers are informed that "everything will be done to hinder the progress of strang ers to the mountains." Visitors are iurther informed that there is no meat tor them, no bread, and no other art icles of daily necessity for sale in the district except to residents. Control lers have been appointed by the com mune to see that the regulations ban ning visitors are strictly carried out. Siam Refuses to Deal With Chinese Officials (Correspondence of The Associated Press.) Canton, China, April '29.
