HUNTER. Denver, Colo., April 18. (Special Telegram.) The Western league base ball season opened in Denver today with Pa Rourke'a team lined tip against the Bears. Preceding the curtain raiser there was a big auto parade, with music by several bands. The Denver Civic and Commercial association-had charge of boosting the opening game and will continue boosting throughout the first twelve games. Several thousand tired busi ness men and their office boys stole quietly away to attend the initial dia mond clash, which was one of the prettiest ever staged in Denver. And both, teams certainly played ball today from start to finish. While the final score stood 5 to 4 in favor of the home team, the game belonged to the visitors, 4 to 2, until the ninth inning, which furnished most of the excitement for the local fans. S. HUNTER. Julesburg, Colo., April 17. (Spe cial" Telegram). The Rourkes ran into some bush league railroading on the journey from Grand Island to Julesburg. A special Pullman had been chartered. The car was to be parked in the Julesburg yards and the athletes thus given plenty of time to snooze. But beiore eight bells a cruel and unfeeling porter yanked all hands from the hay and informed them they had to change to another car, parked half a mile down the line. The ath letes had to pack their luggage the entire distance. A couple of scribes almost got hauled back to North Platte because they tried to snatch a few extra winks despite the porter's warning. Marty U loole and Marty Krug put one over on Forsythe by putting a fifty-pound piece of iron in his grip. Cy almost broke. his back when he at tempted to liffMhe bag. Otto Merz ' smashed a windshield of an ' automobile while hitting fun goes. The owner of the car called the town constable and thus rein forced swooped on Pa Rourke with a claim for damages, but Pa won the argument. . The town put on a big dance for the athletes tonight and Marty Krug dis covered he had some rivals of Ver non Castle on the club. Their names are withheld for fear of embarrassing questions which might be hurled at them upon their return nome in case certain-parties raa the -papers. - Forsythe "pulled a screamer when he dashed from first base to the pitcher's box, made a slide at the box and then scampered back to first. The Julesburg catcher got excited and threw to second, thinking l,y was try ing some kind of steal. A moment later Cy was on second and Brottem on first and they exchanged places on a steal. Cv made a hit using a Morcas Har rison. The Julesburg right fielder has only one arm. He made two or three catches and a single despite his physical handicap. -. Pa Rourke was shaved in Grand Island by the barber who served him regularly twenty years ago when Pa lived in Grand Island. The Rourkes had to take their baths after the game in the town bar ber shoe The hotel had just one bath and that was on the blink be cause the town plumber was indis posed and refused to fix it.
