Little Respect for
Laws, Says Adams
"We need new Commerce High
school," said Principal Karl F. Adams
at the conclusion of his talk' on
"Cigaret Legislation in the Schools"
before the general meeting of the
Omaha Woman's club at the Metro
politan club house Monday afternoon,
"but when the appropriation is made,
don't let your community get econom
ical at the expense of a school audi
torium. Leave off the roof or leave
out the foundation if you think that
is reasonable, but don't leave out a
central auditorium."
"We must train our boys and girls
to have more respect for law," Mr.
Adams began his talk. "The attitude
of Americans in general toward law
is that it is made to be broken if pos
sible. One of the weaknesses of a
democratic form of government is the
frequent change of legislators. A
multitude of laws is passed each time
we have a new set of legislators, then
the administration of these laws is
turned over to a disinterested party.
The result is' that we have little re
spect for law."
Rev. Arthur L. Weatherley of Lin
coln gave the address of the after
noon on "The Menace of Compulsory
Service." "I believe in America,
he said, "I believe in America as the
greatest ideal that exists in the
world. A man that is not willing to
die for America is not worthy the
name of a man, but there is a vast
difference between dying for America
and dying for the forces of greed
which are setting the nations at each
other's throats. These forces of greed
are sayinff, 'We will take advantage
of the excitement of the people, which
has come as the result of the war, to
put across our plans.'
"Don't get excited and carried off
your feet," begged Mr. Weatherley;
"sleep over it as you would over a big
money deal."
Louis F. Swift Purchases

San Francisco, Cal., March 20.
Louis F. Swift, president of Swift &
Co.. burchased here todav 42.000
acres of San Joaquin Valley land for
a price said to be $2,000,000 from the
United States farm Lands company.
O. A. Robertson of St. Paul, Minn.,
is associated with the Chicago packer
in the deal. Swift plans to devote
most of the land to sugar beet grow
ing. Of the tract 8,000 acres are un
der cultivation.

One Mother Thinks Boy Scouts
Are to Go to War When
President Calls.

"I didn't raise my boy to be a sol
dier," one woman told E, E. Herman,
Scout master on the South Side, yes
terday as she demanded the truth of
the statement that her boy, a scout,
would have to go to war if President
Wilson so declared. Mr. Herman has
tened to declare the report was false.
According to Herman, the scouts
are a peaceful organization. They do
not carry weapons of any kind, ui fact
this was never incorporated in the
ultimate intent of the organization,
There also is nothing at all military
about the movement, so mothers
should be at rest.
The scout movement here is gain
ing by leaps and bounds. There are
at present perhaps 500 boys in the
organization, which is expected to
expand into better than 1,000 before
the summer is over.
The movement is being carried on
principally in the Young Men's
Christian association work. The in
tention is to have a summer camp
where a few days can be spent un
der the discipline of cadet officials.
Recruiting Station Established.
Hear, all ye who would serve Uncle
Sam. For three days a double deck
recruiting station has been establish
ed at the comer of Twenty-fourth
and N streets and lieutenants in the
United States army are constantly
there ready to accept any application
into the army.
Sentiment here among the young
men is intensely patriotic and should
the president take a stand for war,
most likely a large delegation of
young blood from the packing houses
would find its war on American man
of war.

"Too many business places are be
ing left open through the negligence
of the proprietors," so said Desk Ser
geant Bill Smith, as he delivered him
self to the reporter at the police
station. "Better tell the people to lock
their doors after this," lie said."
Block Watchman Jack O'Brien say
the same. Last week the vigilant one
discovered no less than seven stores
with unlocked doors. Thursday night
he discovered Bob Clayborn's cloth
ing establishment robbed a Sriort time
after it occurred and the following
night he averted what high have de
veloped into a disastrous lire in the
Jetter saloon at Twenty-fifth and N
streets from an overheated furnace
by calling the police and the owner.
The room was filled with furnace
smoke when discovered.

sunk by a German submarine, are now
listed as missing.
The American embassy learns thai

Middleton said today that his vessel
was sunk without warning. Two life
loats were lowered from the Vigi
lancia and the crew of twenty-eigln
men got into them.' Owing to the
swell of the ocean, however, twenty
five men were thrown into the water.
The boats of the captain snd the
mates picked up ten of the men, but
the other fifteen were drowned.
Captain Middelton says he saw no
submarine during the attack, but thai
one of the engineers thinks he saw a
periscope. The captain saw two oily
streaks on the water about a thousand
yards from the steamer, which he took
to be tracks of torpedoes. The Vigi
lancia was flying .the- American flag
and its name and a flag were painted
on either side. Speaking of his ex
perience in the boat, Captain Middle
ton said:
"After rescuing as many. of the crew
as possible in the boats, we had bis
cuits and wster. At night I fired dis
tress signals several times: By the
glare of the lights, I saw a subma
rine following fifty yards from the
boats between 10 o'clock Friday
night and 2:30 o'clock Saturday
morning, but it made no attempt to
help us. We suffered great hardship
in the boats. One man of the engine
room staff is paralyzed as a result ol
exposure. .
Third officer North of the Vilig
tancia was born in Denmark, but was
a naturalized American. . The name
of Engineer Adeholde was not con
tained in the list of the crew given
out in New York Saturday night. This
list said there were forty-five men in
the ship's company of whom twenty
one, including Captain Middleton,
were Americans. Two of the Ameri
cans were naturalized citizens and one
a Canadian, had taken out his first
citizenship papers.
