Much nervousness and depression pre

wheat market. The chief bearish factor was
confirmation of report! that a serine ot rail

Saturday If the eight-hour law Issue Is not
settled prior to then. Beneficial rains in
the winter crop region tended runner to
give the bears a transient advantage and
too, did paace talk oaaea on tneones
regarding food shortage in belligerent coun
tries. Signs, however, of important ex, on
aalea gradually changed the temper of the
trade, especially alter gossip became cur
rent that buying on the part oi representa
tives of foreign governments had in the
laat few daya run Into millions of 'bushels.
Rumors of a wiutngnesa by uermany to
change the submarine blockade so aa to
avoid war with the United States received
considerable attention In the last hour of
trading. Notwithstanding that the rumors
were very Indefinite, their circulation led
shorts to make a general rush to cover. Aa
result final prices were sharply above
yesterday's close, and also within a fraction
of tho hlgheat point touched today. .
Corn displayed Independent strength ow
ing to the smalliess of receipts her and at
other primary centers. Besides, shipments
war larger than waa the casa laat year.
Oats hardened mainly because ot the up

Sharp breaks in the value of provisions

United States" V V
The Story of War Finncim and
It Bearing on National Growth
HISTORY proves that the sacrifices and
discipline of War have served to in
crease thrift, create efficiency and de
velop resources. The financial record of Ameri
can Wars is one of patriotism and vision. War
obligations have been readily met and economic
progress made.
For the first time in its history, the Urlited
States has now become a creditor nation, and
by meeting the needs of other nations is able to
strengthen its own financial and commercial
position. - - ' . '
Every citizen is concerned in the situation
presented and its relation to his own affairs.
How American Wirwince 1776 hve been financed
and these War debta discharged ; the economic ef
fect of War loans; in thit country and in Europe :
lessons taught by experience and the opportunities
offered for the future are described in a booklet

Recent Tendencies Toward
Higher Levels Halted by
Strike Threat.
RAILROAD SHARES YIELD
New York, March 12. Tendencies re- i
cently manifested by the stock market in
the dlractiun of higher level were halted
today by the turn of events In the contro- I
verxy bo t ween the railway brotherhood and 1
railway managers. The reported attitude of
the labor unions was the more aurprialng
and disconcerting from the fact that the
financial community hail been led to be
lieve In the existence of a temporary work
ing agreement between the opposing inter
ests. '
Railroad shares yielding from 1 to 2 points
on the moderate offering of this morning
with as much and occasionally a little more
for other active stocks Including leading
industrials, shippings, metals and the usual
tipeci&ltles.
Later when dealings dwindled in Insigni
ficant proportions pricea made gradual but
very complete recoveries. Including a few
noteworthy gains, due mainly to short cov
erings. Not a few trader acted upon a
lime-worn proverb of the street that it is
most often hazardous to sell, a itarkct on
strike developments.
As usual United States Steel, which closed
at a slight fractional advance, furnlahed a
very large proportion of the day's business
with Coppers, .Shippings, Central Leather,
and a few other war and em!-wur spe
cialties. Reading whs the only active stock
In the railway -division and utilities were
less conspicuous than usual. Sales, 620,000
shares.
General news had little direct bearing
upon the market, the offering of New York
City bond attracting little attention. Thu
average of bids were regarded as only
fair In view of ths present ease of uionvy.
Dullness was the most pronounced char
acteristic of the market for foreign ex
change, another reversal in Italian remlt
ances having Its basis on sentimental rather
than actual grounds, intimation of an
early announcement of a new French loan
lacked confirmation in authorlattve quar

BONE DBY KANSAS CRACKS
Snow and more snowl
TJic temperature in Omaha laried
only three degrees in the twenty
eight hours from 6 a. m. Monday to
10 a. m. Tuesday. The lowest was
31 and the highest 34 degrees. Nor
is there any important change in tem
perature in sight. "Unsettled, with
probably rain or snow and partly
cloudy," is the prediction.
Rains and snows have been falling
the last twenty-four hours all over
the country from the Rocky to the
Allegheny mountains, a great boon
to the crop prospects. Reports from
bleeding Kansas say the ground was
so bone dry it was cracking.
Worth Many Millions.
If other snow and rain storms have
been worth a million dollars to the
country lying between the Missouri
river and the mountains it is asserted
that the one now general over the en
tire central west should be marked
down as having many times greater
value.
The storm that set in Monday con
tinued all night and now is covering
the widest area of any in years. Ac
cording to the reports to the rail
roads, it extends from Illinois all the
way west into Colorado and Wyom
ing and from far1 up in the Dakotas
down into Oklahoma. With the ex
ception of a pocket up around Sheri
dan, Hardin and Billings, where the
markings were 6 to 10 below zero,
temperatures range all the way from
16 to 40 degrees above zero.
Rain with the Snow.
All over northern and central Ne
braska and Iowa during the last
twenty-four hours the precipitation
has been a mixture of rain and snow,
alternating. The precipitation is fig
ured anywhere from one to two
inches. "
Through southern Iowa and Ne
braska and Kansas rain has been the
rule and the precipitation has been
greater than farther north. Reports
to the Union Pacific indicate that at
numerous places in southern Ne
braska and Kansas there had been a
precipitation of one to three inches in
the last twenty-four hours.
The heavy fall of snow and rain has
caused some alarm among the oper
ating men of the railroads. With the
Why the Telephone Operators
Repeat the If umber Requested
Have you ever noticed that the telephone
operators repeat the numbers for which yon
xall?
These are the reasons for doing this:
1. To let you know that your request
has been received.
2. To give you an opportunity of cor
- recting the operator if she has misunder
stood you.
If you speak slowly and distinctly when the
operator says, "Number, please", acknowledge
ing the operator's repetition by saying "Right"
if she repeats your number correctly, or saying
"No" and giving it again, if she repeats it in
correctly, it will help your telephone, service
greatly. ' .;
Please Answer, "Right"
If you say "Right", instead of "Yes", 'or
"Yes, please", in acknowledging the repetition
of the number by the operator, it will leave no
doubt in her mind that she understood you cor
rectly. If you say, "four-five six-eight", forexam
ple, in' calling for a telephone number, with a
pause between the first two numbers and the
last two, your service will be quickened be
cause . "
