Cattle Cattle were nominally steady to
day, the receipts amounting to only 200
head. For ths week receipts foot up 27,041
head, being the largest since three weeks
ago and about the same aa a year ago.
Prices on good to cho.ee beef- steers are
about the same as at last week's close. The
best cattle during ths week have sold up
to $11.60, th highest on record. Other
grades of hnef steers have been a little
slow to possibly lower. Cows and heifnrs
have remained steady, while stockers and
feeders ars steady to strong.

Hogs Prices were stronger all around the
circuit this morning, and with so small a
supply here the market continued to ad
vanoe, being active at figures that were
generally a big 10c higher. Shippers made
just a fair buy, making their purchases at
mostly 10c higher prices, though a few In
dividual sales showed little or no advanre.
The offerings were not any too large to
satisfy paokero' requirements to begin with
and as shippers were furnishing a fair
amount of competition, killer buyers got
Into the game early. They had to give fully
lOo higher prices for the bulk of their hog,
while some of the lighter kinds duplicated
yesterday's performance by showing the
most ad vanoe, being in spots as much as
16o or mors up. Of courss there ars a few
cases where hogs did not even sell aa much
as lOo higher, but as a general thing the
market was a good dims higher. Quality
was not as good as yesterday, light and
mixed hogs being In larger supply, while
good heavies were here In correspondingly
smaller proportions, so the full strength of
the marekt does not show up on paper.
Ths big end of the offerings sold at $12.60
012.75, and the top reached $12.80, all
records again being broken. Prices are 60$
60c higher than a week ago. Lights, ss
usual, showed ths greatest fluctuations. On
days when shippers were buying freely,
which was most of the week, good lights

Manufacturers who have been up in
the air on Nebraska freight rates for
some months, since Nebraska Order
No. 19 was killed by the Interstate
Commerce commission, now believe
they are beginning to see daylight.
Repeated conferences between the
shippers and the railroads have been
held in Omaha and other cities along
the Missouri river in Iowa and Mis
souri, but a definite schedule of rates
has not yet been agreed upon. How
ever, they are beginning to feel now
that definite proposed schedules will
soon be placed before them.
When the conferences were work
ing well and the shippers thought an
agreement would soon be reached, the
Northwestern road kicked over the
traces and would do nothing on the
modification of rates for Nebraska
north and northwest of Norfolk.
The other roads have compiled ten
tative figures and submitted them.
To Equalize Rates.
What is mainly sought is an equali
zation of rates. That is, as between
competing jobbing and manufactur
ing centers seeking Nebraska busi
ness. The Nebraska rites were or
dered canceled by the Interstate
Commerce commission on the ground
that they were lower than the inter
state rate and therefore the Missouri
river cities across the line could not
compete with Nebraska manufactur
ing and jobbing centers for the busi
ness in the Nebraska trade territory.

But when the Nebraska rates were
canceled, the situation was left in a
greater muddle than before. The In
terstate Commerce commission, in a
general way, ordered the rates to be
put on ton-mile or distance basis.
This seemed too archaic for some of
the shippers and they sought to have
it modified so that they might make
the rales more nearly even from any
given manufacturing and jobbing cen
ter to any given consumers' field. In
other words, they did not want to be
thrown back so suddenly upon s basis
which would give all the advantage to
the fellow who lived nearest the con
sumer. For this reason the conference
followed.
New Tariff Scale.
Now that about all the roads have
agreed except the Northwestern, it is
thought these will ask permission of
the state commission and the inter
state body to put into effect the scale
of tariffs upon whi they and the ship
pers have practically agreed.
This schedule will seek to equalize
as far as possible the rates into Ne
braska as between St. Joseph, Council
Bluffs. Kansas City, Sioux City, Oma
ha, Lincoln, Fremont and other manu
facturing centers in Nebraska.
Meantime, to make the matter s'till
more complicated, there lurks in the
midst of this muddle an injunction
which must be eliminated before much
of anything can be done. For the
roads have an injunction running
against the state of Nebraska and the
State Railway commission restraining
the state and the commission from in
terfering with the putting into effect
of the straight distance scale, as or
dered by the Interstate Commerce
commission. .
