A hurried trip to Omaha to place
his 15-ycar-old daughter, Fay, in a
hospital for an operation (or ap
pendicitis did not prevent Rev. J.
Bruce Wylie, pastor of the Methodist
church at Winside, from heing mar
ried on Wednesday. The bride, Miss
Mabel Slingsby, of Arcadia, came to
Omaha to have the wedding per
formed here instead of at Winside,
so the couple were able to carry out
their intention on the day originally,
set
As the day for the ceremnoy ap
proached plans for it were clouded
by the ilfness of the pastor's daugh
ter, whose mother died years ago. But
when a successful operation was per
formed Tuesday at the Methodist hos
pital here the minister and his
betrothed decide to go ahead with
the wedding and she came to Omaha.
Rev. E. K, Hosman officiated at the
ceremony, which was performed Wed
nesday noon at the Walnut Hill Meth
odist church. Rev. Mr. Hosman is
superintendent of the Norfolk district
of the Methodist church, in which the
groom's pastoral charge is located.

charge of the Walnut Hill church
here , Only close relatives witnessed
the wedding. ,
Rev. and Mrs. Wylie are registered
at the Keen hotel and will go to
Winside this morning.
Realtors Give Creigh
A Handsome Carving Tray
A. I. Creigh, for five years secretary
of the Omaha Real Estate exchange,
was presented with a handsome Shef
field carving tray by the Omaha Real
Estate board, the newly incorporated
organization which succeeds the old
exchange. Mr. Creigh gave up the
secretaryship when the new organiza
tion was formed.
The first of the auctions to be held
by the Omaha Real Estate board is
to be the last Wednesday of this
month, in the Commercial club rooms.
Certain properties will be listed for
auction, and the meeting will be an
open one. Anyone may bid, but the
bid must be made through a realtor.
The word "Realtor," it was said, has
been gaining great Momentum since
the members of the board adopted it
as the term to designate the members
of their profession or business. Many
persons seeking to list property with
some real estate concern are writing
for lists of the realtors. .
The Hiatt company was elected to
membership in the board.
Steel Sheds to Be Built
Over Road in Snow District
Work is now under way on costly
steel construction snow sheds on the
Union Pacific at Rock River, Wyo.,
according to announcement by Gen
eral Manager W. M. Jeffers. The
work is being ruined and will prevent
a recurrence of the recent snow
blockade, which delayed trains there
for a considerable time.. . I
Two and one-half miles ,of vine
roofed and sided steel work at Rock
River will cost the Union Pacific thou
sands of dollars, but will guarantee
freedom from all delays by snow at
that point in the future, Manager
Jeffers says. During the recent block
ade the snow which fell naturally at
Rock River was not bad, but snow
from Elk mountain, twenty-five miles
away, was drifted deep over the road's
tracks and Manager Jeffers lived on a
rotary snow plow for a week directing
the reopening of the line.

Auto Bandit Gets Stiff
Sentence from Judge Sears
James Murphy, the second of a
trio of alleged automobile bandits
which figured in a "feign of terror"
in Omaha last month, pleaded guilty
to highway robbery before Judge
Sears of the district court and was
sentenced to from three to fifteen
years in the ; state penitentiary.
Charles Fisher, another member of
the band, was found guilty by a jury
last week. He will be sentenced lat
er. The third alleged auto highway
man, Pete Baltzer, said by the police
to have been the driver of the' car, is
to be tried on the same charge in
the near future.

MRS. ELIZA BETH WELLS, wife
of Dr. H. L. Wells of West Point, died
at the family home Wednesday of
acute throat trouble. Hhe had been

Seventh Death from This Dis
ease Since the First of the
' Present Year.
FUNERAL ON THURSDAY
Walter Kocper, 17-year-old pupil of
High School of Commerce, suc
cumbed to cerrebro-spinal meningitis
Tuesday afternoon. This was the
seventh death from this disease since
January 1. Mr. Koeper attended
school as usual last Friday, and on
Saturday morning he became ill. He
was sent to a hospital, where he grew
worse until the end came in less than
four days.
He was in his second year at the
Commercial High. His former edu
cation was al! received at Saratoga
school. He was the youngest child
and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Koeper of 2211 Larimore avenue.
Three surviving sisters are; Mrs.
Joseph Reams of Grand Island and
Misses Emma Slid Gertrude Koeper,
who live at home.
The funeral will be held privately
at 2 p. m. oi. Thursday, with burial
at Forest Lawn cemetery.
The young man was a member of
the Boy Scout troop which meets at
Pearl Memorial Methodist church.
He was born in Omaha.

indoor sport for the Rotary club
Wednesday noon at Hotel Fontenelle.
Eight members who had consistently
endeavored to avoid speaking before
the club on an announced program,
were suddenly called upon in suc
cession to make talks.
W. L. Masterman, coffee and spice
dealer, told the Rotarians he roasts
nothing but coffee when they asked
him to tell what he thought of the
club's stunt.
"Don't you ever give out any spice?"
they then asked. He replied, "Never."
Dr. Frank Conlin,odn to be mar
ried, was another shy one asked to
talk, but he tried to avoid it by ex
plaining that he had been doing a lot
of talking lately. He didn't have to
tell why he had been talking so much.
John McCague, jr., was chairman.
Other "shy" speakers were Lester
Hcyn, Billie Wood, George Pray,
Charles Jewell, Jack Sharp and Kurtz.
Masterman and Wood were chosen
as the "best" speakers of the bunch
and will be required to make regular
talks at the next meeting. At that
time Robert Trimble will be expected
to tell of his recent trip to Hawaii.,? .

Blood spurted out of one of the
cells in the city jail at an early hour.
Earl Breeding, laborer of 2204 St.
Mary's avenue, had fallen on the ce
ment floor with auch force that he
ruptured an artery over his right eye.
He bled profusely until a physician

, Admitting that he had done wrong,
Olaf Benson, aged inmate and trusty
of the county hospital, arrested for
taking morphine from the drug room
of the institution and peddling it to
inmates, was given his freedom in po
lice court. "I know I done wrong,
judge, but I want another chance,"
lie pleaded.
Carl Norgaard, an employe, who,
was arrested with Olaf Benson,
charged with inducing the aged trusty
to steal the morphine, was sentenced
to thirty days in the workhouse.
Proposes Big Prizetor
Sinking Submarine
Paris, Tuesday, Feb. 13. A prize
of 500,000 francs for the crew of any
French, allied or neutral vessel which
succeeds in destroying an attacking ,
submarine is provided for in a resolu-
tion introduced in the Chamber of
Deputies today by Andre Lefcvrc.!.
The resolution says that the Germans
are attacking without distinction
ships of all nationalities, armed or
unarmed, and that this creates a new
situation which must by no means
be neglected.
