Missouri Between
Omaha and Decatur
The War department is not in avor
of making a survey of the Missouri
river between Florence and Decatur
for which the Omaha and Decatur
business men had hoped. This means
that the section of the riven and
harbors bill providing for this sur
vev will not be carried. Congress
man Lobccfc had this section tacked
on at the request of his constituents
here. Lieutenant colonel J. r nc
Indoe has sent to the club word that
the War department cannot recom
mend the survey and that the de
partment does not believe it advis
able to spend any more money on
the upper Missouri.
Grain Men Want Equal
Rates from South Nebraska
At the instance of the Omaha Grain
exchange a bill is to be introduced in
the Nebraska legislature, providing
for a distance tariff rate on grain into
Omaha from several of the southern
counties in the state. If the bill fails
of passage, members of the exchange
wilt go before the State Railway com
mission to secure relief.
All towns in Nebraska, with the ex
ception of four, are nearer Omaha
than Kansas City by rail, yet from
practically all towns in the southern
tier of Nebraska counties there is a
differential rate of 1 to 3 centt per
bushel in favor of Kansas City and
against Omaha. The exchange does
not seek any discrimination in favor
of Omaha and against Kansas City,
but seeks to have them put on a par
ity, so far as 'grain rates are con
cerned. Te Poel Not Able to Find
Two Lots in the River
Somebody blundered blundered

Assistant City Attorney Te Poel
did not find two lots in the river, as
was renorted in connection with a
check of property listed by bonds
men for saloon keepers applying tor
1917 licenses.
He found that the lots are in the
river, but he did not find the lots a
distinction with a difference. To
have found the lots, he averred, would
have required cutting through the ice
and descending into the frigid depths
By referring to charts ana maps,
he determined the fact that these lots,
which were dry when platted in the
Grand View addition, are now wet.

of Mrs. Cleda Winthrop, according to
her petition for divorce hied in dis
trict court. She also alleges that
her husband, Lew Winthrop, ha,d a

County Wards Are Looked
Over by the Officials
The children in the Riverview de
tention home were dressed up in their
Sunday best yesterday and inmates of
the county poor farm put on their
most woe-benone looks. The reason
was the semi-annual visit to and in
spection of these institutions by the
judges of the district court and the
county commissioners. Fidgeting
lawyers fumed about court rooms,
anxious couples had to delay their
divorce proceedings and hungry ap
plicants for appointments by the
county board had to wait until the
party returned in the afternoon.

braska Tell Delegates of
Beet Sugar Possibilities.
DISCUSS FOOD STANDARDS
If it is scientifically demonstrated
that syrup for soda pop can be made
as well with the use of beet sugar
as with cane sugar, then the bottlers
of the state will patronize home in
dustries and use beet sugar.
This is one of the things they want
demonstrated. Fifty bottlers of Ne
braska are in Omaha opening the
tenth annual convention of the Ne
braska State Mottlers' association at
the Paxton hotel.
Technical subjects abound on the
program. Professors of the Univer
sity of Nebraska in a considerable
nunibe are scheduled for talks on va
rious phases of the chemistry of soda
pop and the other soft drinks these
men make. F. W. Upson, professor
of agricultural chemistry of the Uni
versity of Nebraska, is to discuss
"Beet Sugar versus Cane Sugar." He
has made extensive experiments in
the making of syrups with the various
kinds of sugar and will tell the results
of his experiments. Hitherto the
manufacturers have been of the opin
ion that beet sugar could not be used
in the manufacture of these drinks.

W. S. Frisbie, chemist of the Ne
braska pure food department, is to
talk on Nebraska food standards.
Sanitary methods of bottling is a sub
ject of Dr. H. H. Waite, bacteri
ologist of the University of Nebraska.
O, K. Martin, of the achool of com
merce, University of Nebraska, is to
discuss uniform accounting.
W. W. Tatum of Lincoln is presi
dent of the association. W. W. Yager
of Omaha is vice president, and Frank
I. Ringer of Lincoln is secretary
treasurer, i
C. J. Marr of Fremont, who was to
have discussed uniform accounting at
the convention, is unable to he here
on account of Illness. He underwent
an operation a few days ago for ap

Bascom H. Robison ,
Left an Estate of
Many Thousands
The late Bascom H. Robison,
founder and president of the Bank
ers' Reserve Life company, who died
December 30, 1916, left an estate es
timated to be worth $120,000, con
sisting of real estate and personal
property.
Following a petition filed by the
heirs, Robert L. Robison, a son, was
appointed administrator by Judge
Crawford of the county court. The
late insurance man left no will.
Those who will share in the dis
position of the estate are: Mrs. Sarah
F, Robison, the widow. Robert L.
Robison, a son, and Mrs. Mrytle R.
Preston, Mrs, Edna R. Wagner and
Mrs. Lillian R. Farney, daughters.
Kelpin Loses So Far in -The
County Clerk Contest
Instead of gaining votes, C E.
Kelpin, unsuccessful candidate in the
last election for the office of county
clerk, has lost about fifty ballots aince
the recount was begun. Kelpin is
contesting the election of County
Clerk Dewey, who won by a 288
majority. The county clerk's ma
jority at noon of the second day of
the recount was 2,322. The ballot
boxes are being reopened and the
votes counted under the supervision
of County Judge Crawford. Only
thirteen precincts have been com
pleted thus far. It will take several
weeks to recount all the votes.

co-operative activities ot the organi
zation with the juvenile court for the

Discuss Case of an
Infant Who Died
Tuesday iii(?ht Mrs. Leon Young,
Twenty-seventh and Dewey avenue,
tucked her 8-month-old baby in its
cradle. When she returned to the
crib less than an hour later she found
her child dead. Of the belief that the
child was merely unconscious she
called Dr. W. H. Walker.
When called on the telephone Wed
nesday Dr. Walker declined to dis
cuss the case. Later af his office he
reiterated his stand and slammed the
door in the face of an interviewer,
whom he threatened to punch in the
nose.
Relatives of the child say that death
was due either to pneumonia or suf

Ticket Agent, Is Dead
O. -F. Jaynes, aged 67 years, former
ticket agent in Omaha for the North
western railroad, died Sunday . at
Gregory, S. D., according to word
which his niece, Mrs. W. B. Fonda of
Dundee, received. Mr. Jaynes was a
brother of H. S. Jaynes. former super
intendent of the Northwestern. The
body will be sent to Omaha for
burial. Funeral services will be held
Thursday afternoon at 1J0 o'clock
from the H. K, Burket parlors, at
Twenty-ninth and Leavenworth
streets. Interment will be in Forest
Lawn cemetery,
