N. M. Bassett Transferred
To Los Angeles by Cudahy
N. M. Bassett, who has been in the
employ of the Cudahy Packing com
pany for the last twenty-one ears,
leaves today with his wife and daugh
ter for Los Angeles, where tjfey will

is to take up the duties of credit man
ager for the Cudahy company in that

The trade In the local pit was very light
today and about the only business was In
May wheat, which closed He higher. The
opening prices on both wheat and corn were
a trifle lower and while there was aome ex
port business reported, there was not enough
to have an appreciable effect on the wheat
situation.
Corn ooened lower, but followed the ad
vance In wheat and just before the close the
May article Jumped to 94o and closed on
this point.
The quotations on oats were nominal, as
there were no trades made In this market,
the May closing ut $4o and the July at
60c.

ment regarding the peace outlook. Mean
while the volume of trade was light and
the market easily affected by transient pit
conditions.

wheat were counterbalanced by complaints
from the west and southwest that crop
damage might result from prevailing cold
weather and the lack of snow covering. Re
ports of the virtual closing down of ono of
the largest milling concerns in Minneapolis
also attracted a good deal of notice. The
reason given for the stoppage was a lack of
cars.
Corn had a firm tone throughout nearly
the entire day. Fresh reports of drouth
damage In Argentina gave strength to the
market, and so aluo did the cold wave. Be

the Houthwest. Oats followed corn. Trade

nothing of any consequence in beef on the
market and prices were nominally un
changed. Receipts for the six days have
been about 34,000 head, which la an un
usually large midwinter run and fully 6,000
heavier than for the week previous, or the
second week In January s year ago. Prices
have been aomwhat uneven, but in the
main there was a well sustained dnmand
for desirable killers and, barring the unsat-
laractory stock and refrigerator oar situa
tion, the market would be In very good
shape,
The bad car situation also Influenced the
tocker and feeder market adversely, and
while trade was active and stronger the
early part of the wevk, the market was
slow and lower toward the close, and Indi
cations are that quite a good many cattle
would have to be carried over until next

week, but they brought the total for tho
week up to 112,766 head, which Is more
than 4,000 larger than any previous weok's
receipts in tne nmtory or the yards. This
week's supply Is 46,000 larger than a week
ago, more than twice aa heavy as two weeks
ago and greater than for the correspond
ing ween last year oy 83,000 nead.
Tne market showed another sharp ad'
vance today, though packers paid higher
prices grudgingly. If anvthlns. the oercent
age of good to choice butcher weight and
heavy hogs were larger than yesterday and
snippers who had broad orders bought
very isir share of the offerings. They paid
prices that ranged from a dime to 20c
higher, and were generally 16o above y ester
day. '
Packer! were slow about getting In. and
tried all through the morning to get hogs
steady, but in the end bulk of the killer
Logs sold a dime higher. Close was alow.
and. If anything, easier, some mixed hogs
not showing quite as much advance as was
paid early, while rather than carry thera

Sheep On one of the largest runs ever
received In January, lambs this woek scored
an upturn of about 36 cents. Slow markets
were the rule, as runs were large In both
cattle and hogs as well as sheep, and many
trains were taie in getting in. while the
chulos were generally congested. Monday's
market was slow, but generally steady,
while Tuesday's trade, while dreggy, showed
lUOMc a a vance, weanesday, on another
big run, prices ruled steady. Thursday's
market was mainly 10c higher, and yester
day, while other points reported steady to
lower, a 10016c advance wss scored here,
the bulk of good offerings selling at $13.40
013.60, with Nome fr stuff downward from
$13.36, and one car of choice fed westerns
at a new record of $13.75. Clipped lambs are
nominally a quarter higher than a week
ago. Almost none wero here during the
week, but a good kind of fresh clipped stuff

If anything, muttons aold easier Monday.

dogs arc helping to keep up the Inch
cost of eating in this country hy Tikii
ratively snatching from the mouths of
humans pound steaks, mutton chops
nud other expensive things. This was
brought out in i'artiament the other
day when it became known that steps
were heing taken to "reduce" the
2.000,000 dogs that inhabit the British
Isles. The result was 4 protest from
alarmed dog lovers and a chorus of
approval by dog haters. Newspapers
have been flooded with letters from
both camps.
The suggestion of the government
to raise the dog tax from $1.50 to $5
is one of the proposed steps to "re
duce the dogs. But it is pointed out
that the breeder and well-to-do owner
will not be deterred by an increased
tax. In favor of the dogs, it is de
clared that dogs were never more use
ful than today. The head of a Lon
don dog home says he gets more re
quests tor dogs than in peace time
so many women are nervous now that
their husbands are in the army and
they buy dogs to guard their homes.
He says that to forbid doEkeeoins as
a form of wasteful extravagance would
cost more m human happiness than
it would save in human blood.
What really makes patriotic people
boil with rage is to see fashionably
dressed women with anywhere from
two to a half a dozen pampered pets..
These are the dogs accused of eating
the pound steaks.
"The really best dogs, like 'all the
best people," says the Daily Mail, "eat.
simple food. A good house dog in a
well-ordered household may be kept in
perfect health at an infinitesimal cost.
It is the utterly useless dog with no
merit but pedigree and no part in life
but to be pampered that develops fas
tidious and extravagant tastes and be
comes a nuisance at home and in the
street, in the hotels and in railway
trains."
But it appears certain that whatever
other breeds may be affected by the
threatened reduction ot licenses the
British bulldog's place is secure. In
defense of the bulldog it is stated that
he is not an expensive luxury, that he
will eat almost anything and ouly re
quires one meal a day. ,
