BRITISH WARSHIP
CORNWALLIS SUNK
Battleship Sent to Bottom of
Mediterranean Tuesday by
Ehemy Submarine.
THIRTEEN MEN MISSING
Today's Calendar of Sports
London, Jan. 1L The sinking of
the British warship Cornwallis by a
submarine in the Mediterranean on
Tuesdsy was annonnced today by the
admiralty. The sea plane carrier Ben-My-Chree
also has been sunk. Thir
teen men from the Cornwallis are
missing and are believed to have been
killed by the explosion.
The official announcement says:
"His majesty's ship Cornwallis,
Captain A. P. Davidson, D. S. O., was
sunk by an enemy submarine on the
ninth in the Mediterranean. The
captain and all the officers are saved
bat there are thirteen men missing
and it is feared they were killed by
the explosion."
"His majesty's sea plane carrier
Ben-My-Chree, Commander O. K.
Samson, D. S. 0., was sunk by gun
fire in Mastelorizo harbor, Asia
Minor, today. The only casualties
were one officer and four men."
The warship referred to apparently
is the British battleship Cornwallis
of 14,000 tons. The last previous re
ports showed it was in service in the
Mediterranean.
There is also i Cornwallis in the
7. class, consisting of warships retired
from active service, but the fact that
it was sunk in the Mediterranean in
dicates that it is the battleship which
has been lost.
. The battleship Cornwallis was laid
down in 1901. It was 405 feet long
and was armed with four twelve-inch,
twelve six-inch and twelve three-inch
guns, six three-pounders and four
torpedo tubes. Its normal comple
ment was 750 men.
The Ben-My-Chree was a converted
merchantman of 651 tons gross. 1

Prize Cockbirds
And Oldest Hen at
Kearney's Big Show
That lie has. four cockbirds which
are so large and tame that he can
drive them about, is the feature
which C. Baughman, successful
business man and poultry raiser of
Topcka, Kan., says he has to bring
to the Nebraska State Poultry asso
ciation sUbw in Kearney, which
starts next Monday. One of these
famous birds is the grand champion
cock of the World's fair and is a
mammoth Buff-Cochin which tips the
beams at fourteen and three-quarter
pounds. The others of the quartet
arc three of his sons, and none
weighs less than thirteen pounds.
The "boys" are each 2 years old.
But this is not the only queer
sight which those who attend the
show will see. A little Hamburg
hen, which was hatched in April,
1900, and boasts of raising sixteen
families, is to be there. It is owned
by Mrs. H. H. McClure of Kearney
and is the oldest hen living. The
Kearney show bids fair to be the big
gest and best in years. A bushel of
mail awaits Secretary Smith, who
will arrive today and establish his
headquarters at the Commercial
club rooms. There will be breeders
and birds from all over the country.
