City Wants Sky for
Limit in Issuing
Some of Its Bonds
City Attorney Rine's proposed city
charter amendment allowing the city
council unlimited power in the mat
ter of issuing certain bonds, will
draw the fire of persons who believe
the maximum amount should be spec
ified in each instance, as has been
the custom.
In the charter amendments which
Mr. Rine took to Lincoln on Wednes
day there is a provision which would
allow the council to sell unlimited
sewer bonds each year without a vote
of the people. The existing provi
sion limits the amount to $200,000
in any one year.
"This would be setting a dangerous
precedent and I believe it would meet
with the opposition of many taxpay
ers," said one of the city commis
sioners. Although the voters would
have recourse to the referendum law
lie maintains that the amount of these
bonds should be expressly stated in
the charter amendment.
City Engineer Bruce recently sub
mitted to Commissioner Jardine of the
public improvements department a
detailed estimate of the amount nec
essary to build an adequate sewer
system, the total being figured at
$2,250,000. The public improvements
department wants to enter into an
extensive sewer building program and
does not want to be hampered by
lack of funds.
Cost of Cabbage Rises to
Almost Prohibitive Price
Sauer kraut and spare ribs and other
dishes in which the cabbage plays an
important part, will probably be
tabooed trom tne poor man s tame in
the future. The cost of cabbage has
reached almost an exorbitant price
and it is almost impossible to buy the
vegetable, dealers say. Choice Hol
land cabbage is offered to local com
mission men at $100 a ton, t.o.b.
Kenosha. Wis. By the time the ship
ment reaches here, and the extra cost
of handling and unloading, with a
small orofit, is added, commission
men say the vegetable is almost
beyond reach of the average working
man.
Last year commission men assert
that choice Holland cabbage could be
purchased for $35 a ton, and previous
to that time could be bought as low
as $3.50 a ton.
The increased cost is due, it is as
serted, to the drouth of the central
states and because of the small
acreage planted. Several years ago
they say such a large amount was
planted in Colorado and neighboring
states that farmers found it unprofit
able to send the vegetable to market.
Sauer krant is retailing in many
stores at two pounds for a quarter,
while last year three times as much
could be purchased for the same
money.
Two Barbers Named by
County Commissioners
The barbers are coming into their
own.
When four new appointments were
made by the county commissioners
Tuesday and the names of the lucky
ones announced, there was jubilation
among the ambitious members of the
tonsorial artists' clan.
For W. T. Hogan, appointed ad
ministrator of charities, and W. L.
Nichols, named as the new superin
tendent of the county hospital, are
expert members of the profesh. Their
friends declare that both can wield
the most delicate of one-eight inch
razors with the best of them.
Court housers believe that they have
finally solved the mystery of the big
bouquet of flowers which was deliv
ered shortly after the appointments
were made. No one knew who sent
the posies, but now it is rumored
that the floral gift was from the bar
bers' union.

A challenge of the evils of nation
alism which England has laid on
India, according to Sir Rabindranath
Tagore's lecture Wednesday evening,
was voiced by by I. B. Stoughton Hol
born, noted Oxford and Cambridge
professor, who spoke for the Drama
league at the Blackstone.
"It comes with ill grace for Tagore
to spit at England after having ac
cepted a title from it. One would
have more respect for the views he
expounds if he had refused it," said
he.
"Instead of crushing India. Eng
land has, if anything, 'nationalized'
India, which was never a nation he
fore. This is wholly apart from th,e
economic good England has accom
plished. Clearing away vast plague
districts which ate up whole sections
of the population is only one in
stance of it," asserted the English
advocate.
Incapable of Reason.
Tagore has a small mmd in many
things and he is incapable of reason
ing, in Holborn's opinion. "He brings
out his points merely by pictures and
figures of speech, in characteristically
eastern fashion," said Holborn.
Holborn has but recently returned
from Japan. "We have much to
learn from the Japanese on the mean
ing of life, far more than we can ever
teach them," he said. "Japan has
stopped the movement to Europeanize
itself and is once more nationalizing
itself according to Japanese ideals, al
though it still takes from western civ
ilization what it can use. It thinks
some day it will be all-powerful."
Tagore, too, emphasized that the
western world had raised up a nation
which some day would be a tremen
dous enemy to those who inspired its
rise
Adopts Girl He Rescues.
Holborn was aboard the ill-fated
Lusitania, but was rescued, together
with a little Canadian girl, whom he
adopted. He suffered a nervous
breakdown subsequently, from which
he has not yet recovered. For her
he wrote a book for girls because he
found so few girls' books suitable for
girls to read.
"Most books for girls are 'mushy'
and namby-pamby," he said. "Young
girls discard them for that reason, in
favor of books much too sophisticated
for them to read."
Holborn was a victim of the great
American grippe when interviewed at
the Fontenelie, and tilled his lecture
date today only by sheer will power.
Seymour Lake Club to
Have Eighteen-Hole Course
The Seymour Lake Country club
will have an eighteen-hole golf course
this summer. Stockholders of the
club at their annual meeting voted to
acquire thirty-two acres adjacent to
the present location, which will make
possible the extension of the golf
links from nine holes to eighteen.

Cries of a 6-month-old baby and the
use of the contents ot a sack of flour
Thursday morning prevented what
may have been a serious tire at the
home of Mrs. Kate Sadie, 222 Maple
street. As it is no one was injured
and the damage is slight.
Before she retired Wednesday night
Mrs. Sadie placed an oil stove in the
bathroom of her home to prevent
watrr pipes from freezing. At 2
o clock her daughter, Mrs. i Maries
Slater, was awakened by the cries
of her baby and found the house filled
with smoke.
Mrs. Slater i-wakened her mother
and they found the oil stove in flames.
Mrs. Sadie emptied a sack of 6onr
on the stove and smothered the fire.
Mrs. Sadie's presence of mind once
before saved her life. Some time ago
she crawled under the house with a
lighted candle to repair something
or other. Her clothes caught tire, but
she quietly beat out the flames and
crawled out unharmed.
Mystery Man Remembers

case of Dan Carey, steam shovel en
gineer, who was taken to St. Joseph's
hospital two weeks ago and for a
while suffered a lapse of memory.
Police Surgeon Shook has received
several letters of inquiry from persons
who thought Carey had not yet been
identified.
Carey is still at the hospital and
while his memory has returned he has
lost his power ot speech.
