HE'S WITH FARMERS' UNION An attack, made upon him by a vicious boar in his hog lots down in TeNas. could nol keep O. V Dorn blazer from attending the convention of the Nebraska Farmers' Educational and Co-Operative State Union in Omaha today. Mr. Dornblarer is national organ izer for the union. He is 75 years old. has been married fifty-six years, and has been a booster of the Farm ers' union ever since its inception. Hut during his talk to the 750 dele gates gathered in the Auditorium he limped slightly in proceeding back and forth over the stage. Down in Texas the swine still have a little of the fighting blood of the old Texas wild hog in them, so when 'Dad" Dornblaier stepped into his hog lot the other day. the old boar popped up his bristles and made for him. In the melee the old gentleman got horned a little by the big ivory tusks, and then severely wrenched his knee in leaping over a fence to get clear. But he rubbed the knee faithfully with liniment from the topmost shelf in the kitchen, and swore he would go to Omaha in spite of all the hogs in Texas. Farmer la Goat. So here he was Wednesday morn ing, declaring in loud tones that the dealer gets the farmer going and com. ing, and that the only remedy is or ganization and that organization through the Farmer' union. He de clared the fanner is the greatest pro ducer of weallh in the United States, pointed out that the government said so in its reports, "and then," he said, "after telling us we are the greatest producers of wealth, they turned around and passed a federal farm loan act to loan money to the farmers, thereby showing clearly that we don't get all we produce, or we wouldn't need this help." The Clay Center Farmer's union orchestra is here with a half dozen or more pieces, and music abounded when the convention opened. W. F. Baxter of Omaha delivered the address of welcome and H. C E wood of Creighton responded. C. S. Bassett of Atlanta, Ga., na tional president of the Farmers' union, made the convention a co-operation talk just before the noon hour. Growth in Omaha. State President Gustafson in his address in the afternoon showed something of the growth of the ex change in Omaha where goods are dispensed to the farmers. He showed that during IV 15 the business (lone bv the exchanue amounted to $J00.- 000, and during 1916 it reached the $1,000,000 mark. In the single item of binder twine alone, he said, 2,250, 000 pounds were sold in 1915 and 4,- 7UO.U0O pounds in 1916. He reviewed the growth of the or ganization, showing that in 1911 the first local was organized in the state; that in December, 1913, the state union was organized, with 245 locals and 5,000 membeis; that in 1914 there were 460 locals, with 11,000 members; that January 1, 1916, there were 731 locals, with 20,000 members, and that at present there are 1,024 locals in the state, with a total mem bership of 30,000; that in 1915 there were eleven counties organized; that January 1, 1916, tl ere were eighteen counties organized, and tnat at pres ent there are thirty-four counties or ganized. Education Sqaubble. On the subject of schools and edu cation President Gustafson said: "The farmer does not demand special privileges. We are only demanding that we may spend our own money to educate our children, and we re sent all attempts made by the 'boss educators' to say how and where our children shall be educated. If every farmer in Nebraska only knew what the program of these 'boss educators' is and what the results would be if their program is carried through they would surely get busy at once and do all in their power to block their plans." The farmers arc here for a three days' session. About 750 attended the opening session in the morning and it is expected that nearly 1,500 delegates will be present before the close of the convention. Embargo On Grain to Seaboard Points Lifted Omaha railroad freight officials arc advised that the embargo on ship ments to Boston and New York has been lifted, particularly as applied to grain. It is reported several large freighters have arrived at these ports and are taking on loads for England, Norway and Sweden. The embargo, however, probably will be replaced before the end of another week. Word has reached Omaha that the congestion at New Orleans and Gal veston is pretty well cleared up and that of each' of these ports there is considerable elevator space available for grain. As a result large ship ments are going south over the Mis souri Pacific and Rock Island. Butler Studies Geography While Confined in Hospital J. P.
