CROSS CURRENTS CONFUSE
New York, Jan. 4. Ranters and reports
dealing with the peace iltuation were cred
ited with causing a reversal In the stock
market today which carried prices down
2 to 8 points. Board room gossip revived
reports of fresh complications between the
United States and Germany, which ad
versely affected the so-called peace stocks,
while dispatches from Washington forecast
ing a new move by this government In the
direction of peace appeared to have a simi
tar effect on the war Issues. Them and
other developments created con tuning oross
currents In the movement of prices, al
though It was apparent that professional
trader were in control,

more emphatic warning against American

responsive to the bearish attitude of the
trading element, standard Issues losing 1 to
2 points, with 6H for Canadian Pacific. The
southern division was firmest of that group
at temporary gains of 1 to 2 points.
Munitions anil equipments, loatner ana

SUITLE5S SOLDIER
Clothing Problem of Fourth Ne
braska Interests Members
of State Legislature.
SICK MEN ABE BETTER
Governor Keith Neville, his staff
and members of the state legislature
will be at Fort. Crook Saturday to
help decide the momentous question:
"Will the soldier boys be -allowed to
wear their khaki uniforms home after
being mustered out? Will they have
to buy new suits, or will they have
to go home in barrels?" '
No grand review of troops or oth
er military pomp will mark the com
ing of the governor and the law-mak- ,
ers. Their visit to the post will be
in the nature of an unofficial call
for the business of solving the cloth-.
ing problem of the regiment.
The rub lies in he fact that Uncle
Sam confiscates the uniform of hia
fighting man just as soon as the sol
dier is mustered out; - .v
Serious Problem. t'
Of course, all the boys are not
victims of the clothing shortage. Bui
it is a serious problem to those who
are. Many of the soldiers wrote home
after they were on the border for .,
a few months and had seen their
waist line shrink and their chests ex
pand, that their civilian suits would
hereafter be useless to them and in
structed the folks back home to give ,
the clothes away. Thus was charity
endowed heavily at Christmas from
the clothes closet of many a Nebraska
trooper.
Colonel Eberly reports that the
three sick men are convalescent and,
if present progress continues, they
will be out of the post infirmary
within a week.
Robert F. Wilbur of Omaha, first
sergeant of machine gun company,
was honorably dismissed from serv
ice Wednesday. His enlistment had
expired January 2. He plans to en
ter the Oregon Agricultural' college.
Edwin Quivro of Friend, Neb, was
appointed chief musician of the regi
mental band. ,
Dance at Post
The quartermasters' corps will give
a dance Saturday night at the post
gymnasium for the benefit of the
quartermasters'' mess fund. There
will be a band concert for the pub
lic at the fort Sunday afternoon at
3 o'clock. , :' .
No ceremony will attend the mus
tering out of the men. This "paper i
work," as the army terms it, merely
converts the members of. the Fourth
Nebraska from federal troops to Ne
braska guardsmen and incidentally
entails a medical examination.
