1916, bank deposits in Omaha are to
day $30,000,000 greater than a year
ago. A bank call for December 27,
1916, by the United States comp
troller brings out these figures.
The total bank deposits in the thir
ieen banks in this city on December
.7 were $95,746,568. On December
.11, 1915, hen the comptroller issued
his final call of that year, the total
deposits were $65388,138. Every sin
gle bank shows a gain in deposits
over one vear affO.
On November 17, 1916, the date of
the comptroller s last previous call,
the deposits in local banks were $96,
701,497. This slight loss, however,
bankers assert has no significance.
They also aver the new year business
is starting briskly, and had the comp
troller issued his call for statements
a few days later, a -am would be
marked up. Some of the banks, the
First, Live Stock, Packers, Omaha
State, Security State, American State
and South Omaha Savings banks did
make small gains in deposits.
Loans and discounts show an in
crease over both one year ago and
the time of the last previoos call, in
' dicating a greatly stimulated busiress
even since. November.

To Seahoard Are
I Extremely Heavy
During the last forty-eight hours
there have been some heavy ship
ments of wheat toward the Atlantic
seahoard and as a result the surplus
stock of wheat in Omaha elevators
has been greatly reduced. All told,
in the elevators here the surplus ex
ceeds that of the corresponding date
of last year by only 420,000 bushels,
the lowest in the last three months.

' Guardsmen's Positions Held
Open for Them by Employers
That guardsmen who joined the
colors when they were called by the
president would not lose their former
. jobs over the act was the belief of
Colonel George A. Eberly. The com
manding officer of the Fourth regi
ment said that he has a number of
, letters from firms saying they would
keep the positions of their former
employes open until they were mus
; tered out.
Many large firms were co-operating,
.. he said, in trying to find places for
. the guardsmen. As a particular exam
; pie ne cited the stock yards, which
... stent him word that it would find room
: . for ten of the returned soldiers.
Other officers said they have a num-
ber of men in their companies, how
ever, that they would like to place.
Firms who had promised to keep

they went to the border made good

filmi for children, a movement spon
sored by the educational committee of
the Omaha Woman's club, is sweep
ing all the mothers' clubs of the city.
Mrs. W. S. Knight, head of the com
mittee, talked on better films before
Jewish women of the city today at
Lyric hall and has arranged the fol
lowing speakers and dates in response
to calls from the various organiza
tions: Mrs. Edwin S. Jewell, Miller
Park Mothers' club, at the home of
Mrs. J. N. Hansen, Wednesday; Mrs.
George B. Darr, newly organized
Saratoga Mothers' circle, at Saratoga
school, Friday, and Mrs. Edward
Johnson, at Dundee Child Conserva
tion league, next Monday.
Definite plans for carrying on the
campaign for better children's pro
grams will be outlined at these meet
ings. Meeting Thursday.

children's programs which will be in
augurated ; in downtown theaters

Says Fifty-Six Hundred
Pounds of Horse Hit Him
The trial of George W. Rinkler,
who filed suit against the Ringling
Brothers' circus for $25,000 is on in
the federal court.
Rinkler, an Omaha brick mason, as
serts that he was watching a Ringling
Brothers parade near the federal
building in August, 1914. A team be
came unmanageable, he asserts in his
petition, bolted into the crowd,
knocked him down, and before the
animals could be controlled, four of
them, big dappled grays weighing at
least 1,400 pounds each, ran over him.
As a result he claims that he has
been made a helpless cripple for life.
Smashes Furniture and Kills
Chicks; Nagging Wife Blamed
Angered at his wife, whom he said
"nagged" him continually, Bert John
son, a bill poster living at 2826 Charles
street, last night commenced to break
up housekeeping with the aid of an
axe instead of a lawyer.
He demolished some of the furni
ture and then went out into the chick
en coop and slew all of his fine
blooded chickens and hacked them
into gory hash. When the police ar
rived he was already subdued by his
wife with the aid of a stove poker.
Lecturer's Valuable
Slides Are Destroyed
Fine Arts society members have
learned that fire in the home of Dr.
T. Lindsey Blayney at Houston, Tex.,
the other day, destroyed 1,000 costly
slides of Japan, which Dr. Blayney
planned to use in his lectures Thurs
day and Friday afternoons at the
Hotel Fontenelle. Dr. Blayney col
lected the slides during ten yean
spent in the orient Whether Dc
Blayney will use borrowed slides to
illustrate his lectures, or whether he
will change the subjects has not yet
been determined.
Dr. Blayney is an authority on far
east conditions, and on account of
his first-hand knowledge, was called
to the Lake Mohonk conference on
the Philippines recently. He received
his education in Europe and has trav
eled extensively in Asia and Africa.
He taught at the University of Flor
ence. He is now associated with
Rice institute at Houston.
