day In prospect the lent day of the year In
the atock market was characterised hy an
excessive dullness and few price changes of
important. Dealings were altogether pro
fessional and represented to a greater de
gree than ordinarily the winding up of spec
ulative accounts.
Public Interest was evidently at a low
ebb, even the bond division reflecting III tie
or no Inquiry. For the moHt part trading
was restricted to the usual favor! ten, with
marked preKrfure against the motors and
their subsidiaries, as well as other special
ties conspicuous In the depreaslon of the
lust few weeks.
Utilities, notably the, gas shares, tobaccos,
some of the papers and leathers and many
shares of no specific description, were Ir
regularly lower, with modorate heaviness In
rails The only noteworthy feature of the
latter division was the WaHah group, the
new preferred "A" atock hardening on the
declaration of an initial dividend of 1 per

Equipments and munitions were somowhtft
mixed, Bethlehem Steel, however, rising 30
points, with 1 0 2 for some of- the other
distinctive war shares. United States Steel
broke moderately at tha outset, hut more
than regained Its loss, closing at a net

siderable activity tn ' Texas company at an
extreme gain of 16 potutn. Copper and
