THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: DECEMBER 24, 1916. DOMKEY ENGINE M0mBIG BRIDGE Great Feat of Engineering Car Tied Out With Tin ! Christmas Spirit is Active at Grand Island Women's Christian Association, which has been engaged in the work for several years, was busy all Friday evening and Saturday in distributing boxes with clothing, food and articles DeWitt Man Hurt , When Car Overturns CHANGING BRIDGES OVER MISSOURI RIVER WHILE YOU WAIT Engineer, on Sat urday achieved the remarkable feat of changing the Union Pacific crowing of the Missouri river by substituting a new bridge for the old on the same pier. The upper panel allows the old bridge shifted onto false work north of the pier, while the new bridge rest on the trestle work to the aouth, the piers showing between the two structures. The lower panel shows the new bridge in position on the piers and ready for permanent connections .to be made. v Grand Island, .Neb., Dec. 23. i (Special.) Christmas will be cele- brated in Grand Island, so far as j community efforts are concerned, in i a more elaborate way than ever be- fore. Four district organizations are ; busy seeing to it that no child in I Grand Island will be without its for children. The Elks will tiave a Christmas tree at their hall for the kiddies and will distribute children's De Witt, Neb., Dec. 23.-(Special Telegram.) William F. Koch of near presents. The Women's Park Assd-1 De Witt was probably fatally injured ciation will have the first municipal Christmas tree ever provided here, and the Civic League is looking' after the poor families in a more substan tial manner. when the car in which he and his wife . Success, j.f, ; "' and little daughter were riding struck a rut in the road and overturned. Mrs. Koch was slightly injured. The child was unhurt. Christmas joys, and that no family in unusually unfortunate circum stances will be missed. The Young BIO CROWDS WATCH ' IT icmd treat Pn Owl fvt engine poffrd fcnd snorted, but the load, 11,200,000 pounds was a lit tle heavy for their combined pnllink abihtvt but the structure moved off smoothly, stoping after having gone five feet". There was a delay of thirty minutes in order to make some changes in the rollers under the spans and again a "tart was made, this time the bridge rolled along until its north side was well Over the piers.' Again it was found necessary "to" make some changes in the pulling machinery, lu bricate the tracks on whicrj the rollers , turned and tightened up "some of the guide ropes. This having been done, again the signal to-move was given and the great masj of tl rolled along, apparently with as little effort as would be required to push a baby v cab. This rime.-before the- engines stopped working, the bridge was in place, the joints and bolt, holes in the plates at the ends fitting those of that portion of the old structure to which it is attached. '; Cranes Life Rails. Great lifting cranes were brought up to either end of the new bridge and with these, rails that' had been taken from the ' tracks on the ap prochet were laid in- place: Power jacks were applied at the piers and the entire new bridge lifted enough so that the rolls used in its moving could be released.' Then it was slowly dropped onto the tops of the piers, the steel girders imbedding their bottoms in thick sheet lead, placed there so that the weight of the bridge will sink all of the rough edges of the face of the steel into it and at . the same time, drive the lead down into the crevices and holes in the rock, thus preventing any slipping of girders of the main superstructure. This work required some time, but with the gang of expert workmen, each knowing the particular duty he was to perform, the bridge was lined up sod ready. for the passing of'tii. evening trains, at 4:20. o'clock., . Crowd Watches Work. r , Propably 1,000 person stood in the cold and watched the moving of the two bridges, but only those having passes were; permitted on the ap proches, the'others having to content themselves by standing back in the railroad yards? 1)000 to 1,200 feet away. ' ., -.X The last engine to pass over the old bridge-was Union - Pacific tNo. , 1243, i one ." of , the machines that hnadles the Grand Island local. It was driven, by (J. B. Hodson, road foreman of the; Nebraska division and fired , by Ottb Bckel. Riding on it were J. L. He, worked on the first bridge that the Union Pa cific built ovef ten river here in 1872 and on the bridge just removed to give place foahe present new struc- ' ture. : " ' , Officials Watch Move. ' All of the Union Pacific official in the city were spectators at ' the bridge moving, remaining from start to finish and with them as guests, they had s number of the officials of the other lines operating in and out of Omaha. ; The wrecking, or rather dismatting of the old bridge will begin at once. It will be taken apart piece by piece and all of the material will be used again. Three spirts will be converted into a sinsle track bridge on the Ore gon Short Line, and the fourth span j will serve as, a oriage over one oi the streams crossed by the Oregon I & Washington railroad, both of which road are a part of the Union Pacific system. ;,-. In dismantling the old bridge, the greater portion oi the hoisting will be done from the deck of the new structure.
