Hartwick who is managing today's- card party. 1 "Since when have you become a de votee of the card game?" "Oh, I don't play cards muchr4 ve always been too busy getting votes for women. But, there are so many women who would never come to a suffrage meeting, but will go to sev- . eral card parties a week, so we de cided to give card parties which they would attend." George Hammond askea me to marry him the day after he was ad mitted to the New York bar. Of course 1 said yes, in fact I consid ered it a great honor, and I was a . great deal subdued by the fact that I had promised to marry a lawyer. George -had always been an admitted friend of the family, but truthfully speaking I never dreamed that he would look at me. He seemed too serious somehow and, .although he was not so very much older, just the same, he seemed so. - I never knew very much about the technical matters concerned with be ing a lawyer. In fact, 1 never knew very much about a lawyer's life, be yond the fact that it was a chosen profession and one that any man might be proud to follow. All that I discovered at first hand about George's profession I discovered in the same way that I found out a few other things about life, by overhear ing, accidentally, a conversation sup posed to be private. I wandered into George s office one morning. In fact he had asked me to come in and had said he would take me to lunch somewhere. It was really marvelous the way George's name was mentioned all over and I was so proud that I had promised to marry him. Why, even my father had said that George was bound to make his way in the world and when , I had asked why dad had responded: "Why, he understands the tricks of the profession." How strange that I didn't understand then what it all meant. This particular morning I waited in the little ante-room adjoining George's office. The stenographer had gone to lunch, but she told me before she left that George was busy and would come out just as soon as he could, so I waited. At first 1 didn't pay any attention to what I had heard through a half-open door, but gradu ally I began to notice certain phrases. A woman's voice said hardly above a whisper: "Yes, she was run over. Mr. Hammond, my own little girl. Of course 1 want to sue for damages, but I am poor." 'And then George's" voice,' cold, cal culating as I had .never remembered hearing "it: . :''Very well,. but it means 50 per cent of the damages." That was all 1 heard, for there were only a few. more sentences and then George came out to me. rubbing his hands as though he had had a very good morning's work. We went out into the sunshine and I asked lightly: . t , "What was the case you were dis cussing with that poor woman? Was she crying?" . . I George laughed cynically. : "That's nothing. Anne, they all do that. But just the same it's going to be -a -pretty good case, the woman doesn't know much, and I oughtn't ic have much trouble winning her damage:! for 1icr." "Was her child ru,. over.?" 1 asked uietly. "Ye$.. nnd she ought to collect a jood deal on it. I ought to clean j fifteen hundred myself." i "Rut.. Gcorgr." protested, "the Jinan's poor. Wliy are you so mcr eWy?" ; "That's my business, my dear." George .responded. ' I can aflord to 'iuv. you a new trinket, a bracelet, or .hat'' pendant .you spoke about last week. '.' M'd father have you give the money 0 the poor woman," I said coldly. "Nonsense, Anne, you're too altruistic.- You're deciding my cases, with the ideas of an impractical dreamer." Was this 'George? I asked myself wonderingly, : Surely if 1 married him we" sliould never agree. Of course 1 didn't want him to be a philanthro pist or anything like that. I know those things don't happen in the world of business today. But anybody will allpw for certain circumstances, and George was planning to buy me a gift out of the money he earned through this p6or woman. , : It voud never do and that evening 1 told ., George simply and directly. Of course lie didn't agree with me. he thought, I . was foolish and quixotic, but, anyway, I am all right with my own-conscience and I feel a lot bet ter than I did as George's fiancee. a.L .IV. I .
