THREE LOCAL ROADS
PLACEEMBARGOES!
Two Will Not Keceive Freight
for Shipment East of Chi
cago U. P. Also in Line.
LIVE STOCK AN EXCEPTION
The freight embargo is an original
product of the eastern roads, but now
it has traveled westward, reaching
Omaha, where it has been placed by
three of the leading lines having ter
minals here.
Effective instanter, the Northwest
ern and the Milwaukee have placed
embargoes on the shipment of all
commodities, with the exception of
live stock, dressed meats- and perish
able goods, to point east of Chicago.
No date for the lifting of the em
bargo is set, the understanding be
ing that it will continue so long as
congestion exists at terminal points
in the east. When this reiiet is to
come is uncertain, railroad men as
serting that sidings and railroad
yards practically all the way from
Chicago east to the Atlantic coast are
filled with cars loaded for domestic
and export trade.
Embargo la Broad.
The embargo laid br the North
western and Milwaukee is broad in
its scone, extending to lines with
which the companies have formerly
been doing business, r or instance,
at junction points cars coming in off
other lines and for transportation east
will not be accepted so long as the
embargo is in effect. Hdwever, all
consignments to local points between
Omaha and Chicago will De received
and forwarded as usual, but the ban
is on everything else.
The Union Pacific has come to the
front with a freight embargo and has
given all other roads notice of the
placing of the same. This embargo
becomes effective December 26 and is
booked to continue up to and mclud
ing January 7.
The scone of the Union Pacific em
bargo is substantially the same as the
one laid on freight shipments by the
Northwestern and Milwaukee, only
that it is to the west, instead of to
the east As a result the Union Pa
cific will not accept freight for com
petitive points west of Omaha.
Like the embargo by the other
nH tli at of the Union Pacific Der
mits the handling of through ship
ments of live stock, meats or per
ishable freight.
The other railroads the Burling
ton. Rock Island. Great Western, Illi
nnis Central. Wabash and Missouri
Pacific are looking for the laying of
embargoes at any time on shipments
out of Omaha, the understanding of
railroad officials being that this is a
move upon the part of the heads of
the transportation lines to permit of
an nnnortunitv of cleaning up the
congestion in the east and get busi
ness back on a normal basis.
All of the railroad officials assert
that the lines they represent are los
ing large sums of money by not re
ceiving shipments off other roads, but
add that if something of the kind is
not done shortly the situation is
lllrrlv tn become so complicated in
the east that it will require months of
time to straighten it out.
Grocer Throws Up
His Hands, but He
Has a Gun in One
Tames Soellman. grocer at 1102
North Seventeenth street, was equal
to the occasion when three strangers
Monday evening invited him to hold
his hands over his head while they
robbed the store.
The trio entered at 9 p. m. and
one asked for a sack of tobacco. While
the grocer was making change at the
cash register one of the men ordered
him to turn around and hold up his
hands. v Spellman quickly reached for
his revolver, which he started to un
load. The trio then rushed for the
door, one firing two shots as a part
ing salute. Nobody was hurt; nothing
stolen. '
