APPROACHING holidays and the necessity
for Christmas shopping has disarranged
the club calendar somewhat, meetings hav
ing been put forward or postponed or
omitted altogether to accommodate shop
pers and workers at Christmas bazars.
Christmas programs, too, are quite the' rule, while
activities' destined to make th holiday season a
happier one for the "down-and-outera" occupy all
club women.
The high cost of living problem was not settled
during the last week, although discussions on the
subject were many and heated. Mrs. Vernon C
Bennett, president of the Omaha Consumers' league,
and Mrs. D. G. Craighead were instrumental in hav
ing the question brought up at the farmers' conven
tion, the Philosophical society, various social centers
and women's clubs, besides the big meeting held
at the city hall Friday, but prices still soar and we
still pay them.
Nebraska women arc to be given an opportunity
to view household probtems from a variety of angles
this year at the annual meeting of the State Home
Economics association to be held at Lincoln, January
16 to 18, in connection with organized agriculture
meetings billed for men at the university farm at the
same time.
Practically every activity in the home is to be
touched in the course of the three-day session. The
program has just been completed and includes ad
dresses by the following well known women: Mrs.
J. N. Paul of St. Paul, Neb., president of the State
Federation of "Women's Clubs, "Conserve Your
Strength;" Mrs. K. R. J. Edholm of Omaha, special
agent for the federal children's bureau, "The Light
that Flashes;" Miss Florence Ward of the states'
relations service of the United" States Department of
Agriculture, "Some Farm Home Problems;" Mrs.
J. D. Hoffman of Lincoln, "Color Problems in
Every Day Life;" Mrs. F. J. Burnett of Omaha,
chairman of home economics department of Omaha
Woman's club, "Problems in Shopping," and Mrs.
H. H. Wheeler of Lincoln, "Business and Women."
A "get-acquainted" tea is to be given the evening
oi January 16 by Mrs. Samuel Avery, wife of Chan
cellor Avery, and Mrs. E. A. Burnett, wife of Dean
Burnett, to all women who come to the meeting.
A number of exhibits in home economics work done
by students will be open to inspection by visitors.
Several talks are to be given by members of the
home economics department of the university and
by extension service workers. This part of the pro
gram includes: Alice M. Loomis, head of the home
economics department, "The Third Function of
Food;" Mary Rokahr and Aural Scott, "Preparing
Desserts," a cooking demonstration; K. F. Warner.
' The Retail Cuts of Beef," a meat-cutting demon
stration; Alice M. Loomis, "The Trend in Women's
Clothing;" Maud M. Wilson. "The Woman County
Agent;" and Prof. L. W. Chase, "Household Me
chanics." A canning demonstration with children, showing
one branch of the work done by the Nebraska Boys'
and Girls' club, is to be offered by Miss Emma Ort,
of the junior extension service.
The General Federation of Women's Clubs is to
co-operate again this year with the United States
bureau and national and state organizations in a
second nation-wide baby week, to be held early in
May, 1917. This campaign will be carried out under
the direction of the general federation departments,
of which the chairmen are Mrs. Bessie Leach Priddy,
chairman of civics, Ypsilanti, Mich.; Mrs!
Joseph Gawler, Denver, Colo., chairman of home
economics and Mrs. Elmer Blair, Albany, N. Y
chairman of health. The announcement of the date
and plans for baby week will be in the General
Federation Magazine for next month. The United
Stales Children's bureau is prepared to furnish sug
gestions to any organization or individual interested
in planning a baby week.
Clubs having the three departments above men
tioned will draft their chairmen for the committee
having charge of the movement locally. Clubs not
having these departments can take it up under any

Miss' Mackay will have as her attendants at the
ceremony on the evening of December 27, Miss Jo
sephine Congdon, Miss Harriet Smith, Miss Janet
Hall and Miss Gertrude Metz, for bride's maids, and
Mrs. Fred Daugherty, a bride of the spring, for ma
tron of honor. .
A telephone message was received in Omaha at
noon Saturday from Mr. Carroll Bickelhaupt of
New York City, to the effect that he would be able
to come to Omaha to act as best man for Mr. Gailey.
The ushers will include Mr. Stanley Mackay of Chi
cago, Mr. Paul Plciss, also of Chicago, and Mr.
Frank Selby and Mr. Fred Daugherty of Omaha.
Beginning Monday will come a host of affairs for
the young people. On Monday Mrs. Fred Daugher
ty will give an afternoon bridge for the bride-elect,
Tuesday Miss Janet Hall is entertaining at dinner
at the Fontenelle for Miss Mackay and Mr. Gailev. .

afternoon bridge,1 which will be followed that even
ing by a bridge with Miss Josephine Congdon as the
hostess. Thursday evening Miss Gertrude Metz
will give an Orpheum party, with supper at the
Fontenelle afterward for the wedding party. Satur
day will be a busy day on the calendar, with a bridge
luncheon in the afternoon given by Mrs. Arthur
Metz, and in the evening a dinner at the Fontenelle,
given by Miss Harriet Smith before the Junior club
danre.
Christmas day Mr. Gailey will be a member of
the family dinner party at the Mackay home, which
will include Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Mackay and daugh
ter of Chicago. Stanley Mackay of Chicago, Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Macfcay of Pittsburgh, brothers of Miss
Eleanor, ami their wives, who have arrived to spend
Tuesday and the holidays, and to attend the wed
ding. Mrs. A. B. McConnell will give a dinner at
the Blackstone for the wedding partv. Miss Daphne
Peters, and Miss Gladys gave the first affair for the
hride-to-be last Thursday when they entertained
the young women cf the parly at luncheon at their
home. j
The ranks of the younger set are being sadly de
puted this year by the attacks of the young God
of love. Two of the recent brides, who were inti
mate friends of Miss Mackay, although they will
be unable to attend her tnarriagc, are eagerly wait
ing to hear all the dctajjs. They are Mr. Walter
Scott Penfield-of Washington, and Mrs. Elias Vail
of Poughkeepsie, N. Y.
In Buffalo, N. Y., preparations for the second
wedding are now in progress. Miss Norma Mack
and Mr. Philip Metz will be married January 10, in
Buffalo. Miss Mack is being entertained by her
hosts of friends, but many of the entertainments will
be delayed until Mr. Metz goes east the first week
in January. Then affairs for the entire wedding
party, which is an extremely large one. including
two matrons and two best men, in addition to tho
bndes maids and matrons of honor, are planned.
This week, in addition to the affairs for the bride-to-be,
the Christmas gayety begins. Miss Regina
Connell is to be entertained at a debutante party
at the home of Mrs, Windsor F. Megeath on Tues
day. Saturday, however, marks the beginning of
the gay holiday whirl. That evening the younger
school set will frolic at the Blackstone as the guesti
of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barker.
Dinners galore will precede the Junior club danca
at the Fontenelle the same evening. The commit
tee of women, composed of Mrs. W. J. Foye, Miss ,
Regina Connell, Miss Harriet Smith and Miss
Daphne Peters is fulfilling its function by assist
ing the men in their plans for the big holiday dancs
and stimulating interest in the curious minds of all
members.
It is still too early for hostesses to have com
pleted their lists for dinners before the Junior club
dance. Aside from the affair to be given by Misa
Harriett Smith for the Gailey-Mackay wedding party,
the only dinner of which we have yet heard will
be that given by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Patersoa
at the Blackstone before the dance.
