THE BEE: OMAHA. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1916. SCHREIBER'S WAGE REPORT IS READY Welfare Board Head Prepares Data on Conditions of Wet-king: Girls in Omaha. AUTO MEN ARE WELL PAID In his invcsiiga'iuu of working conditions of Omaha. Superintendent Sciireiber oi the Kuard of Public Weliarc will show in a forthcoming statement that only a comparative few of the girls and women eniplojed in the packing houe industry- re ceive more than $7 a week. Investi gator of the Welfare department lia.c made a survey of working con ditions of the city, embracing hours, ages, wages and other features of many industries. Wages paid per v.yv'k to girls and women at the packing houses visited have beeu summarized as follows: 24 at 55; 98 at $: -'0! at $7: .W at $; 'at': 7 at $10; 4 at $11: 6 at $12. The anes of these workers are: i, 14 to lo; 151, 16 to 20; 84, 20 to 25; 45 25 to .10; 78. .it) to 40; 46, 40 to 50; 7, over 50. Average Pay. The average weekly wage paid to female employes in laundries is $7.50, divided in this manner; 1 at $4; 58 at $6; 75 at $7; 42 at $8; 58 at $9; 10 at $10; 15 over $10. The wages of male workers in the meat industry range from $8 to $16. with a few receiving from $18 to $30. Information received at three cigar factories showed that 27 cigarmakers received $14 a week and two sales men $16. In the automobile industry me chanics were listed from $10 to $30, as follows: 15 at $10; 17 at $12; 33 at $14; 78 at $16; 71 at $18; 73 at $20; 15 at $22; 17 at $24; 16 at $28; 9 at $30. Auto Men's High Average. The average wage of 532 employes in the automobile industry, as inves tigated by the Welfare board work ers, is $20 a week. . In the manufacture of shirts, neck wear and overalls the prevailing wages, are $10, $12, $14 and $16, with a few receiving more or less than tftose amounts. In the classification there are more being paid $14 than any other wage. The bag and paper box industry tabulation shows gen eral wages ranging from $10 to $16. Complete tabulations will not be ready, until next week. Farmer Loses Coin, ( But Gains Caution Race horse confidence men are again at work in Omaha, according to Gust Helberg, aged 65, and hu son. Dennison Helberg. both of Brady Island, Neb., who appeared at police headquarters and told how the elder Helberg had been fleeced out of $25. Helberg arrived in town Thursday and during his son's absence he made the acquaintance of two velvet ton'gucd strangers who induced him to "lay" $25 on an alleged ure-thing horse race in Cuba. He won the bet, of course, but did not get hij "cut' because the strangers could not change a fifty-dollar note. He was told to return for another "tip" even better than the first one. This is where the ' con" men planned to make the big haul. 'His father'i actions aroused ' the suspicion of his son, who is wiser to the ways of the world. After he had been questioned, the elder Helberg reluctantly told of his indiscretions. T he son accompanied the father to the police station and laid the case before detectives, who planned a coup in bring about the arrest I of the swindlers. Helberg was sent to meet them aa if nothing had occurred and the police were to break up the party, 'jut the "slickers" didn't ahow up, jHelberg believes the experience was wprth $25. Unlicensed Clerk Sells Drugs Daily Heading guilty before County Judge Crawford to a charge of vend ing drugs and medicines without a registered pharmacist, 1". Pratt Har uood, laundryman and one of the owner! of the Capitol Drug company, 1624 Capitol avenue, declared that he didn't know it was necessary to have a registered man in charge of the pre scription counter all the time. Testimony brought out the fact that the Capitol Drug company has been doing business parts of each day with out the services of a registered phar macist. The drug company is a cor poration, the laundryman being one of several owners. Judge Crawford fined the concern $40 and costs. Harwood was arrested on com plaint of S. E. Ewing of Lincoln, chiirman of the violation committee of the Nebraska state board of phar macy examiners, who is in Omaha making raids on drug stores which , are not in charge of registered phar macists. The defendant attempted to estab lish an alibi, but when that was dis credited he asked for leniency on the grounds that he has a wife and works for Postmaster Fanning. The case was tried Thursday even ing at a mock trial held at the Miller i'ark school community center, of which Mr. Black is supervisor. The affair caused much merriment for a I goodly gathering.
