Archbishop Harty
To Arrive Friday
The committee appointed last
August by the Ancient Order of
Hibernians to arrange a reception for
Archbishop Harty when he arrives
to become bishop of the local diocese,
has been called to meet Tuesday eve
ning in Dr. Mullin's office in the
Brown block. Patrick Heafey, chair
man, issued the call for the meeting.
Archbishop Harty will arrive in
Omaha Friday. Monsignor Colaneri
has already gone to Seattle to meet
the new bishop and accompany him
on his journey to this city. Bishop
McGovern will join Archbishop Har
ty at Cheyenne and Bishop Tihem
will ioin him at Fremont.
The installation of the new bishop
will be held at 10 o'clock the morn
ing of December 21 at the new
cathedral.

SELF -DENIAL IS NEEDED

I can tell you how to reduce the
high cost of living. Reduce it. That
is the secret. It lies in yourself.
The trouble is that most of our
plans end in talk. Most people
haven't got the will power to act,
where their pampered appetites are
concerned. They talk about boycott-
g eggs and boycotting other high-
priced things. Having breathed ter
rible threats against the wicked food
boosters, they go home and, over a
sumptuous meal of high-priced foods,
they discuss wnat tney are going
to do.
Oh. hut we are a weak-necked peo
ple when it comes to our personal
comforts and luxuries. In oiu-
bright lexicon the word "self-denial
is not found. Many of us rather
pride ourselves on having what we
want Money no object, you know.
We want what we want when we
want it
Thrift is rather a disgrace nowa
days. We want to be "sports." Would
we pinch a nickelr 1 guess not we
wouldn t even pincn a nonar, even
those of us who onlv make twelve
or fifteen of them in a week. No,
sir. Were snorts, good spenders.
Did vou ever notice that the 'good
spenders" generally keep the milkman
and the grocer and the butcher wait
ing the longest for their just dues
and are the despair of bill collectors?
The frencli can teacn us some
thing on this subject. The most pol
ished people and at the same time me
most thrifty people in the world are
the French. Before the war they had
almost twice as much money per
canita saved as we. The Frenchman
will omch a centime ana ne isn t
ashamed of it. When he thinks a
thing is too high he isn t afraid to
say so. But he is a real "sport."
When it comes to helping the less
fortunate he is right there. loday, in
the hour of his country's need, he is
cheerfully paying the expense of the
war out of his enormous savings.
A French housewife would no more
think of throwing away a loaf of
bread became it is stale than she
would think of buying spmething that
she thinks is a couple of sous too
hmh.
We need more individuality, more
real pride and less "tinhorn sport"
oride which comoels some men to
give a waiter an exorbitant tip for
fear the waiter will consider mm a
chean skate. The Frenchman eats
a 40-cent meal and gives a 4-cent tip,
for which he gets a bow and hearty
thanks.
We need to cultivate the virtue
of self-denial. If we til ink eggs are
too high we ought to have the gump
tion to say to our appetite, "Nothing
doine. old bov. till eggs get cheaper."
Then the "egg king" in Chicago
would soon be lying awake nights
worrying about his 1,000,000,000 eggs
in cold storage. And soon he would
be "broke," as he deserves to be, by
the wrath of a strong people, capable
of the old-fashioned virtues ot self
denial and thrift.
We would be better off, physically
and financially, if we cut out the high-
priced foods, and cut down on the
amount ot our tooa, too.
We eat too much. We admit it and
we hope the other fellow will cut
down. We ought to eat more of the
old-fashioned foods that are inex
pensive even today. We know that
and we heartily advise the other fel
low to eat them.
But let's do it ourselves.
What's that? You really couldn't
get along without your two fried
eggs every morning for breakfast
Oh, very well. Go ahead. But if
vou haven't got the will-power to
deny yourself that much, please don't
kick about the price.
Goes to New York On
A Spring Buying Trip
In order to secure unusually early
shioment of soring suits, dresses and
blouses Julius Orkin is spending the
two weeks before Christmas
searching the markets for advanced
styles. Much merchandise for im
mediate wear will arrive at his store
within the next few days.
Mrs. M. Wasserman of the Col
bert apartments, who accompanied
Mr. Orkin to New York, will spend
the holidays visiting her brother, 1
B. Orkin of Ninety-eighth and River
side Drive. Julius Orkin and his sis
ter will include visits to Boston, Bal
tmore, Washington and Philadelphia
on the trip.
"Diana, the Huntress," is
Shown to the Exhibitors
A large number of Omaha and
Council Bluffs motion picture exhibi
tors witnessed an advance showing of
"Diana, the Huntress," a special re
lease of the Kontenelle Feature Film
company, this morning at the Em
press. The picture has to do with
the fable that explains the appear
ance of the two faces in the moon.
It is beautifully staged, has great
scenic and artistic effects and, unlike
many state rights and present day
features, does riot deal with any of
the social problems of the day.

Of Her Family in Poland
Mile. Sophia Naistitz Naimska of
Brownell Hall faculty goes to New
York for the Christmas vacation to
get first hand information about the
condition of her family and friends
in war-stricken Poland. A cousin,
Sophia Naimska, who teaches at the
Damrosch institute, spent last sum
mer in Poland.
The Omaha Mile. Naimska has re
ceived no word from her family since
last September and she is much dis
tressed about it. She hopes to go
abroad herself next summer.
Thieves Make a Good
Sunday Night Haul
Burglars' toll Sunday night at the
home of C. H. Falling, 2518 Burdette
street, was two diamond stickpins,
one ring set with six small diamonds,
one watch chain and $85 in cash. The
thieves gained entrance by jimmying
open a rear window.
Higher Cost of
"Next-to-Godlmess"
Those who do not like to pay the
10 per cent increase in their laundry
bill, which went into effect some
months ago in Omaha, are now to
find no great relief in seeking to do
their own washing. For laundry soap
has advanced.
The common brands of laundry
soaps, which have for years sold ten
bars for a quarter, are selling nine
bars for a quarter. A dime's worth
of salsoda comes in a smaller pack
age than it did six months ago. Those
who heat their water for the wash
tub over a coal tire are paying $2 to
$2.50 a ton more for coal than they
did a few months ago. If the wash
ing machine needs oil, it is found
that lubricating oil is higher than it
was, and about the only wash day
necessity that has not advanced is
water.
Auto Thieves Have
Profitable Sunday
Three automobiles were stolen in
Omaha Sunday, according to police
reports. Burglars smashed the lock
on A. Weiss' garage, 1704 Lake street
and made away with a 1917 model,
live-passenger t'aige.
Dr. 5. McUencghen, m Nansas
avenue, reported that his car nad
been stolen at 11.9 Lincoln boulevard
bred Anheuser. 3216 South Ihirty-
sccond street, lost his auto at Thirty
second and Chicago.
Sunderland Brothers business car,
stolen Saturday night, was found to
day four miles west of Llmwood
park.
Photo Play Revised So
That Child May Live
T. F. Strugess, chairman of the
Board of Public Welfare, received
from the National Board of Review
of Motion Pictures a letter in which
information is given that the board
ordered a revision of a photoplay
dealing with the subject of killing
The revised film will show a com
mittee of physicians passing on a
case and deciding that the infant of
the photoplay story shall live.
This revision is in line with ex
pressions given by various Omaha
men and women with whom Mr.
Sturgess conferred before he replied
to inquiries from the national board.
Lonely Grain Boat Lies
In Omaha for Winter
With the river rapidly freezing
over, it is likely that the Julius F.
silber will be unable to make more
trios to Decatur this season.
Captain Neflf is lying with his boat
in a little cove just south of where
the hog chutes were built a block or
two south of the Douglas street
bridge, and watching the freezing
process of the river.
He was exceedingly anxious to
make at least one more trip, espe
cially as the boat is all loaded with a
cargo of merchandise for Decatur.
Alleged Wife Deserter
Is Released Under Bond
Horace Lenox Bray, arrested Sat
urday as a fugitive from justice
charged with having deserted his
wife and family in Massachusetts,
was released on bonds in the sum of
$500. Bray is an accountant and has
resided in Omaha for several months.
