"WILD HORSE" CASE
IS AGAIN IN COURT
Selling Range-Rnnoing Anl
mala Profitable Till Govern
ment Butted In. .
NOTED OMAHANS INVOLVED
After several years of delay, the
old "wild horse" case will be brought
up before Judge Woodrough of the
federal court December 4. The case
involves i number of prominent
Omahans. It is alleged by govern
ment officials that thousands of dol
lars were obtained from stockmen
and farmers of the middle west by a
clique of men who represented them
selves as the owners of a large num
ber of wild horses in Arizona.
The method was to sell a brand of
horses running .on the range with
the understanding that the purchasers
were to gather their own horses. The
purchasers, after reaching the range,
discovered that it was impossible for
them to tell whether they actually
had any horses and that it would be
a physical impossibility to catch
them. This practice went on for i
number of years and there seemed no
legal way of stopping it until the
postal authorities got after the con
spirators for using the mails to de
fraud. The wild horse sclieme was incor-
fiorated under the laws of this state
or $250,000 and stock sold to many
prominent citirens.
Forty-two persons were indicted by
the federal grand jury April 22, 1914,
for having a hand in the affairs of
the company, but because of the
death of Judge W. H. Munger and
the appointment of new attorneys the
case has been allowed to drag along.

'EVERYBODY'S DOING IT"
By A. R. GROH.
In 1879 a new-fangled contrivance
called the "telephone" was introduced
into Omaha. It was claimed that, by
means of it, a person could talk to
another person several miles away.
Of course, most people "didn't take
much stock in it." but there were
some who did. By midsummer 1.11
telephones had been installed and the
first directory was issued.
This directory was a single sheet of
paper, 7 by ii inches in sire. At the
top were printed voluminous instruc
tions for using the instrument, "How
to call the central office, How to
converse with someone on your own
circuit," etc.
Those Instructions.
'To communicate with the central
office," the instructions said, "signal
two bells and wait for their response,
after which remove the telephone
from its hook and be careful to push
the hook to the left, and then, hold
ing the telephone firmly" (under
scored) "to the ear you will hear the
voice of the operator at the central
office. If you hear nothing, turn the
bell several times to the right and
call, as it may be someone is calling
on your own circuit,"
Alter two or three weeks ot study,
it is probable most people were able
to call the central office with consid
erable success. Today we grab the
receiver from the hook and there
the central office. "A child can op
erate it.
"I Want Gladys."
There were no telephone numbers
in those days. Subscribers asked by
name for the person they wanted.
Several of the people and firms who
had telephones then are still "locat
ed" at the same place. Here are
some of the names found on that hrst
telephone directory:..

Dairy Business
' In Nebraska Grows
Fred Allen, the Northwestern Rail
road company's general dairy agent,
is in town from Chicago and after
having made his fall trip over s
greater portion of the company's ter
ritory. Mr. Allen asserts that the dairy in
dustry has made wonderful strides
during the last twr years and is con
stantly increasing. He says that in no
locality visitedyis more interest being
taken in the dairy business than in
Nebraska. The number of cows has
increased greatly during the last two
years. Farmers have improved their
nreeds and have turned much of
their attention to securing milk-producing
stock. Everywhere there has
been an excellent demand for cream
and butter, and prices have continued
high.
No Connection of House of

The brick work on the new Old

vard is nearing completion and the
new $75,000 structure will soon be
ready for the roof. This structure is
being erected on land given the as

city.

is a rumor out of the consolidation
of the Old People's Home and the

A" building i.ot less than fifteen

New Memberships V--:j .-'
In Grain Exchange
Are to Cost $10,000
Amended articles of incorporation
of the Omaha Grain exchange filed
with the county clerk place no limit
on the number of treasury member
ships which can be issued, but raise
the cost of them so high that they
are practically prohibitive. Thus,
anyone desiring a treasury member
ship on the Omaha Grain exchange
can have it by paying $10,000.
The original valuation placed on
the treasury memberships by the
board of directors was $1,000. There
were 200 of these memberships is
sued, making the capital stock of the
exchange $200,000,
The increase in the price of treas
ury memberships will in no wise ef
fect the actual market value of those
now held by the 200 members of the
exchange, according to Barton Mil
lard, .president of the body. Seats
now nave a market value of $3,000
or $.1,500. - .
