Six months ago dealers quoted prices ranging from $8.75 to $14 a barrel for future delivery. The prices today range from $20 to $30 a barrel, wholesale. "I played in good luck when I or dered three barrels last summer at a price of about $9 a barrel. 1 have just received the kraut," remarked a north side grocer as he looked at the prize packages on the wall "I want to tell you about potatoes, if you have a minute to spare, and just show you where the grocer is placed," he continued. "Last year I put in about 500 bush els of potatoes and they kept O. K. This season I was afraid to put them in, for fear they would spoil. There is something different about the po tatoes this season. Guess they didn't plant them deep enough. At the pres ent wholesale prices of potatoes I don't care to take a chance on put ting in a large stock." No Danger of Fuel Famine, Say Dealers While there is no great surplus on hand, stocks of coal in storage in Omaha are such that little fear of shortage is felt. When the Omahans awoke this morning and found the ground covered with snow, they looked over their coal bins and then, if the quantities were low, got in com munication with the dealers. Dealers report that the morning orders were tar in excess of any mor ning in the last -ix weeks. All day long teams that could be pressed into service have been delivering coal. The supply, with the exception of hard coal and that for steam plants, is said to be about up to the normal, large quantities having been shipped in during the last two weeks. Unless the unforseen occurs, dealers say there is no danger of any fuel famine. Dr. King's New Life rills. Regular bowfll movement I, eseantlal to your health. COLORED FOLKS ARE ARDENT BELIEVERS Man in the Pulpit Rivets Atten tion of Congregation He Uses Big Words. DEVOUT FAITH MANIFEST By A. R. GROH. Last Sunday I went to a colored church, or rather to a church com posed of "colored" people. No, I ani not going to try and make you laugh with a lot of ridiculous nesses in darkey dialect. I saw noth ing ridiculous. That little "colored" congregation throbbed with interest, ardor and conviction. Every man and woman sat with eyes on the minister. They hung on every word of his discourse. They voiced their approval. "Yes, sir," "that's right," 'amen," "have mercy, Lord," were frequently heard from the audience as the minicter drove home point titer point. True, the preacher showed a predi lection for polysyllable words and high-sounding phrases. He said "the 7th proximo instead of th: simpler "December 7," he brought in ''the psychological situation" several times and he spoke of "Napoleon, that great mediaeval hero." But these are not important. , A Sunday Type. The important thing is that his sermon was a model of clear logic and every point was understood by the congregation. He spoke in the vigorous "Billy" Sunday style. He smote the pulpit, he struck out with his hands, he mopped the perspira tion from his forehead. "The battle of life is not to the strong," he said, "nor the race to the swift, but the victory is to him that is faithful to the end faithful, faith ful, faithful." (Cries of "amen," "that's right," "yes, yes."). Some folks think if they drop 10 cents in the collection box they have done their duty. We don't need money in the church as much as we need Christian fidelity. There's too much 10-cent religion nowadays." Wonderful Prayer, Then there was a prayer by one of the men of the congregation, a won derful prayer. Starting out very slowly, hesitatingly, at though he couldn't find words, he rose soon to an ecstasy of pleading. Then, in the unconscious eloquence of his appeal, his clear voice flowed naturally into a chant, a song of prayer in which a flood of words rushed rhythmically into unstudied , music. This contin ued, perhaps, five minutes and then the prayer was brought quickly to a simple close. How were they dressed? ' All of them at least as well as myself. Some of the younger ones were dressed in the height of fashion. An industrious, thrifty, sober-minded class of colored people, the kind that make one be lieve in the future of the ex-slave race. ' ' ' - They had a natural politeness, too, The .presence of a white man in the congregation was apparently not no ticed. Nobody stared at me. When I sat down one of the brethren brought me a hymn book. That was all the notice they took of me. Would we be quite so tactful if a colored brother came in and sat down among us? The average . Caucasian church goer can learn much from the "coir ored" church, H would do your pas tor good to have even one-tenth as much appreciation voiced for his ser mons as was voiced for the sermon of the colored preacher not neces sarily "right out in meeting" but af ter the meeting, anyway. i . Mrs. McGee Granted Divorce From Hugh Following a bitterly fought suit in Judge Leslie's court, Mrs. Mary Cayton-Casey-McGee was granted a divorce decree from Hugh McGee. The McGee's property, consisting of a house and lot, was awarded to the plaintiff. , . McGee denied that he was the worthless character as alleged by his spouse, who allowed, though, that her husband was a "pretty good sort" when - in a normal condition, but a "regular devil" when he had a few under his belt. , The defendant created a sensation in the court room when, in the midst of a cross-examination, he pointed his finger at his step-daughter a grown woman, who was sitting be side her mother and declared that she and "Old Casey," one of his wife's former husbands, were the causes of the divorce proceedings. The1 husband's attorney accused Mrs. McGee of being " an adept at getting divorces." . Takes Three-Day Layoff, Pals Aver Wedding Bells George Powers, 3508 Jackson street, pilot on a parcels post wagon, has re turned to his work after an absence of three days. No more did he enter the postofflce than a score of his co-workers swooped down upon him to extend congratulations and felicitations, and a couple of the facetiously inclined offered condolence:. Powers' pals ac cused him of having fallen from the blessed state of celibacy to become a benedict. Powers made haste to deny the allegations, but his pals aver they have the inside dope that Powers took a quiet sneak over into Iowa, where he had the knot tied hard and fast. Powers continues to insist his three-day layoff was merely a vaca tion, but his arguments fail to make any impression around the postofflce building. Mme.
