THE BEE: OMAHA, MONDAY, iSVEMBER 6, 1916, BW8 la aid They KB don tagi Hope fpigi s Iwre Till JVL - a Council Bluffs is not as large as Omaha; but it can sincerely and unselfishly urge the people of Omaha to join us in making the entire community dry. " Signed) JOE W. SMITH, President Chamber of Commerce. (Signed) M. B. SNYDER, Mayor. The aboveNs a statement from the Mayor, and President of the Chamber of, Commerce of Council Bluffs, printed in the Sunday issue of this paper in a paid ad by the Dry Committee for the benefit of the citizens, of Omaha. When the Dry Committee pul lished'this statement they played right into our hands, for we have been telling the citizens of Omaha that the merchants of Council Bluffs were anxious to see our city go dry, because the merchants of Council Bluffs have been losing trade since they adopted prohibition. The above statement from the men across the river goes to make our argument for license all the stronger from a business point of view. We have been telling you that the merchants from across the river have been praying for Omaha to go dry and have contributed to the dry campaign fund, and behold, at last they come out with a signed statement to that effect. - . 0 merchants, professional men, laboring men and real estate owners of Omaha, what more proof could you wish than the above statement that prohibition has been a failure in Council Bluffs and that it will work a hardship' on the merchants of this city? Can it be impossible for you to see that the merchants of Council Bluffs are suffering from a business depression on ac count of prohibition? ; If so, how can you, in the face of this statement, support prohibition? ' , Again we state that prohibition has worked a hard ship on the merchants of Council Bluffs, and they are anxious for Omaha to adopt prohibition in order that they may get some of the trade back .that they formerly enjoyed before their city was afflicted with the prohi bition blight. . .' The advocates of prohibition clai mthat the mer chants of Council Bluffs denounce the Taxpayers' League of Omaha. Sure they woulc denounce the Tax payers' League of Omaha! They would denounce any body of men in Omaha or anywhere else who will stand for a license policy in Omaha. LICENSE FOR OMAH A AND PROHIBITION FOR, COUNCIL BLUFFS SPELLS BUSINESS DEPRESSION IN COUNCIL BLUFFS AND PROSPERITY FOR THE CITIZENS OF OMAHA; The merchants of CDuncil Bluffs see their old patrons going by their shop doors, crossing the river bridge, doing theirv shopping in Omaha and returning with parcels which were purchased from their com petitors on this side of the river. ' This is their reason for denouncing the Taxpayers' League. "Make the entire community dry," says the Presi dent of the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce. Sure, the business men of jCouncil Bluffs want Omaha to adopt prohibition for the following reasons: The farmers who , live in the near-by community in Iowa and who1 formerly shopped with the merchants in Council Bluffs before prohibition went into effect there, now go right on through that city to Omaha. They don't even stop for gasoline or water. All that Council Bluffs merchants get from farmers in the near by community at present is the dust and the exhaust from their machines going through that city. Real Estate The drys claim there are only seven vacant store rooms in Council Bluffs. We publish for your inf orma- , tiona list of the vacant store and office buildings across the river and you can judge for yourself whether or not the drys have told the truth in regard to the empty buildings in Council Bluffs. - I They are just as close to the truth with their state ment in regard to the above as they were with any of their statements throughout the campaign. We will leave it for the drys to answer. . 1 Oh, merchants and property owners and taxpayers of Omaha, think in a straight line for just a moment! Can't you imagine the destruction of property values in Omaha should prohibition go into effect? Can't you at once see a 25 to 40 per cent increase in your tax rate? ' . ' .' ' : ,. ; ' , How can you support a proposition that will throw hundreds of vacant store rooms in the midst of -your city, such as Council Bluffs has today? Douglas ounty Taxpayers' leagtie
