Patton, engineer of the third section of the tram which ran 'into the rear end of the second section, told his story at the inquest held at Smithfield. He asserted he was run ning at a speed of about twenty miles an hour, when he suddenly saw the red lights of the second section at a distance of about twenty or twenty five car lengths.- "I immediately set the air," he testified,' "but, 'the rails were slippery on account, of a misty rain, which also obscured, the view, and was unable to stop in time to prevent the collision. I had de creased the speed to ten miles an hour when the crash came.'' No Signals Flashed. ' He further testified that he re ceived no warning signals nor did he see any flagman. His first intimation of the presence of the second section was when he saw the red lights an the rear car. .
