TWO-DOLLAR WHEAT
UNLESS ANEMBARGO
Jay Burns Leaves for New
York, Where an Effort Will
Be Made to Stop Export.
MOT ENOUGH FOR HOME USE
"Two dollar wheat is near at hand
unless an embargo is declared at
once."
This statement was made by Jay
Burns, president of the Jay Burns
Baking company, before departing
last night for New York to take a
leading part in an embargo mass
meeting called for the Cooper Union
hall on Saturday.
"I am flooded with circulars from
millers, flour brokers and others in the
trade predicting $2 wheat very short
ly," said Mr. Burns.
"When there is certain to be enough
wheat to just go around for food and
seed in this country, the normal price
would be about $1 a bushel. We now
face the fact that there is less than
two-thirds enough' wheat to furnish
our own people tkrith bread and with
seed for next year's crop, and if ex
ports do not stop this will be cut to
one-half the normal amount required
for our own needs within a few
months.
"Our wheat production this year
was 611,000,000 bushels. Our natural
requirements are 625.000,000 bushels.
But we had 160,000.000 bushels left
over from last year, which left us a
surplus of 146,000,000 bushels, which
we could export. Already the sur
plus has been depleted, and wheat is
being exported at the rate of 1,000.000
bushels a day right now. Since July
1 we have exported 85,000,000 bushels.
"We favor a restriction on exports,
the extent to depe:.d upon the results
of thorough investigation by recog
nised authorities. We also favor free
admission of Canadian or foreign
wheat.
"The mass meeting in Cooper
Union hall on Saturday, under the
auspices of the United Master Bak
ers of Greater New York, is not in
tended as embarrassing to the admin
istration or to have any political sig
nificance.' Officers of all political
parties have been invited to speak.
"Neither is there anything unnat
ural about our desire for an embargo.
For the first time in the history of
the United States we have imported
wheat this year, and for the first time
since 1886 our domestic crop is below
our own requirements. ,
"An embargo on wheat would be
opposed by the farmers, of course, but
when you stop to analyse the gov
ernment's census figures and find that
less than 5 per cent of the popula
tion of the United States is interest
ed in hiah orices for wheat, for only
that proportion of our farmers pro
duce wheat, is It lair to gorge inc
pockets of this small percentage and
take bread out of the mouths of the
remaining 95 per, cent of our people?"
Big Auto Crashes
Through Windows
A driverless seven-passenger -automobile
backed diagonally from the
weat end of the New Hamilton apart
ments, Twenty-fourth and Farnam
streets, across the west curb and into
the Farnam street plate glasa show
windows of Rogers' confectionery
store.
Peggy Cochrane was packing candy
boxes just inside the window with
her back turned toward the street,
and the crash almost put her. in a
oanic.
The damage to windows, ornament
al lamps and candy is estimated at
several hundred dollars.
The wild car was being used by
William Green, in the employ of J.
J. Hanighen. It is believed tnr vibra
tion of the engine cauaed the clutch
to connect.
A pedestrian noticed the situation
and made a dash for the car, hoping
to get into the seat and shut off the
engine, but the machine was moving
too fast for him to essay the feat.
Several children playing at the curb
narrowly escaped being struck.
Sea Food Arrives
For Elks' Clambake
Transported by express on the fast
est trains running between this city
and the Atlantic coast, several tons
of sea food arrived in Omaha from
New York at noon for the sixth an
nual Elks' clambake which will be
held at Krug park Friday afternoon.
Clambs, lobsters, oysters all carried
the delicious aroma of the ocean when
they were unpacked, and those Elks
who were on hand upon the arrival
of the shipment began to see visions
of themselves at the bake.
Some entertainment features are
being scheduled for the bake. Jack
Conway and his male supporters, who
appear at the Gayety next week, has
promised to be on the job with a lot
of new stuff, and Morley Young's ath
letic boys have been signed up for
a number of stunts. Jack Walters
also has been commissioned to book
an attraction. Walters, being a very
secretive and reticent person, refused
to divulge the nature of his attraction,
but says it will be a hummer.
