REMARKABLE RIDE
MADE BYCOSSACKS
Troops Which Joined British on
Tigris Made Fast Time in

MET WITH KO OPPOSITION
(rorraapond.no. of Tha Asaoolated Praaa.)
Petrogrsd, July 29. The remark'
able ride by a squadron of Cossacks
who succeeded in effecting a junction
between the Russian troops in the
neighborhood of Kermanshah and the
British on the Tigris, as has previous
ly been mentioned in these dispatches.
was made at the rate ot twenty-tour
miles a day. for seven and a half days.
over 180 miles of extremely moun
tainous region which made the
achievement an exceptional one.
The squadron or sotnia consisted
of five officers, 110 men snd 125
horses, and left Mahidasht, twenty
mues soutnwest oi rvcrmansnan, on
the evening of Mav 8 and arrived at
Aid Charbi on the Tigris on the 18th.
there having been, in addition to the
actual riding time, a two and a halt
days halt.
The track was frequently difficult
even for pack-transport, and a number
of rugged passes some of them more
than 8,000 feet high had to be negoti
ated; enemy forces were likely to be
met with at any moment and the en
tire country traversed was infested
with war-like tribles whose attitude
at best was decidedly doubtful. Never
theless no actual opposition was en
countered, though stray shots at long
range did occur, and on one occasion
the sotnia entered a village just halt
an hour after a superior hostile force
had left it. This force is said to have
numbered about ISO mounted tribes
men accompanied by German officers.
Three days' rations were carried to
start with, and, when these were con
sumed, the troops lived entirely on
the country, ourch 3ing barlev. flour.
rice and sheep from the villagers-. No
sickness occurred among the men, but
two horses fell ovtir precipies and five
others died of exhaustion, or of thirst
during the last twenty-five miles of
desert between the foothills and the
Kiver l igns.
Cossacks Are Hardy Riders.
Throughout the whole enternrise
mobility played a role of paramount
importance, ana tne mgii degree ol
this quality displayed by the Cos
sack on this ss on other occasions
may be ascribed to a variety of causes.

life roaming about the steppe on
horseback. This has taught him to
rough it, to look after himself and to
become an expert foraeer. He hahi.
tually eats little and is accustomed to
long marches on short commons.
Un his person he has his rifls. hi
sabre, his water bottle, his haversack
and sixty rounds of ammunition. His
great coat, watercoat, waterproof
sheet and horscblanket are carried
rolled behind the saddle, while theJ
tood tor his mount is contained in a
pair of wallets that will take iifteen
pounds ot grain. I he remainder of
his outfit consists of 240 round, nf
ammunition, four horseshoes, one
day's bread, three days' groceries, one
pound of bullv beef, a shirt, a nair r.f

oi which go into saddlebags attached
behind the stirrup-leathers.
He rides with a straight le on a
narrow saddle much liehter than nr.

tne cossacks were warmly welcomed
by the British troons and marl, aa
comfortable as the exigencies of war
permitted and it is noteworthy that
though they reached camp after night
fall, the Cossacks disported them
selves with song and dance till 1 a, m
before seeking their rest.
After a couple of davs resnite from
their long journey, the commander of
tne squadron and two ot Ins officers
were invited to Basrah to meet Sir
Percy Lake, commanding the army in
Mesopotamia. During their stay at

DEPORTED FRENCH
ARE HAPPY PEOPLE
Neutral Newspaper Men find
Without Basis Reports of
German Cruelty.
CAMPS AEE KEPT SANITARY
(Comapondonc. or Tha Associated Praaa
Sedan, France, Sep'. 9. Following
the protest abroad about the action ot
the German authorities in deporting
from the cities of Lille, Roubaix and
Tourcoing several thousand ol the
civil inhabitants,, and about the al-.
leged hardships those civilians had
had to undergo, the military authori
ties in the occupied portion of. France
recently afforded a number of neutral
correspondents the opportunity to
visit several hundred of the so-called
"Excuses" and see for themselves the
conditions under which they now
live. t
A representative of The Associated
Press visited two large "conscript
camps" where men of military age
are kept under guard-and some eight
villages where larpe numbers of so
called emigrants, men and women,
live without guard and busy them
selves chiefl with agricultural occu
pations. -, iv. -
One Malcontent.
With one exception that a con
script camp in the city of Sedan itself
the correspondent found the former
residents of the cities to the north
west living under surprisingly clean,
sanitary circumstances. Repeated
questioning brought only the answer
th: the people were reasonably
happy and comfortable, justly and
fairly treated, and, very often far bet
ter off than they had been at home.
The correspondent ate the food
which the Evacu.s icceive most of
it through the Spanish-American com
mittee with which the German au
thorities haw nothing to do and it
appeared in general good and tasty.
remaps the best testimonial tor the
generally prevailing sentiment was
the fact that in the thirteen villages
which form the group around Sedan,
and eight of which the correspondents
visited, only one attempt to escape
had been made, and the man who
made that came back voluntarily.
Camps Clean
The housing conditions varied ac
cording to the town and the quarters
available in each, but without excep
tion they were spotlessly clean and
airy.. The second conscript camp
visited was located in an old chateau
or villa, and was declared by the men
there to be tar better than conditions
as they had known them at home.
The exception to the general rule- '
of satisfaction on the part of the
bvacues was in the camp tt Sedan,
where, the correspondents were told.
only men of military age were kept,
or men who in Lille, Roubaix or
Turcoing had prosecuted some perni
cious activity that made their removal
a military necessity.
Here, in a one-time factory now out
of business, 200 or 300 persons, from
boys to men ot 45, were housed in
close quarters. ' Asked regarding
their condition, several compla:ned
that the food .was monotonous a
complaint that one can hear all the
way trom the front trenches to the
best equipped prison camp In the
country said the bread was sour, and
in some instances spoke of their ill
nesses, notably rheumatism and tub
erculosis. - i i
