Game in Chicago Loop Theater Insists on Best Photoplay.
G. L. Adkins. manacer of the Besse
on the South Side, entered the movie
game ten years ago in a' theater in
1 the "loop" district in Chicago. In
thofe days admissions were not num
erous and the cash
ier, after selling a
few tickets, would
go into the theater
and put on an illus
trated song and
then go back to
sell more tickets.
Mr. Adkins came
to Omaha in 1913
and started busi
ness in the Resse
at 2-fth and N. St.
For a time pictures
and vaudeville were run, but later the
vaudeville was eliminated. High class
features, serials and variety bills are
now the order. He was the first to
install a modern organ in Nebraska
Shows at the Besse are always closed
with a comedy so that folks will go
away smiling, making a good adver
tisement for the show to those on
the outside or iust comine in. Dur
ing Ak-Sar-Ben week the Besse will
present some exceptionally clever pro
grams.
Interesting Notes on Nutio's
Romeo and Juliet Production
The stars are Francis X. Bushman.
as Romeo, and Beverly Bayne, as
The cost of production was $250,
000. j
The first picture was taken May 25,
1916; the last August 2J, 1916 thir
teen weeks to a day.
The cost of the costumes alone
amounted to $35,000.
John VV. Noble was general di
rector; associated with him were Ed
ward Eisner, assistant director; Ru
dolph De Cordova, Shakespearian
adviser; Edward Towers, casting and
costume director; Leander De Cor
dova, financial and assistant director;
Harry Sothern, costume and assistant
director.
The scenario made from William
Shakespeare's great drama, "Romeo
and Juliet," was submitted by John
Arthur and accepted; Rudolph De
Cordova modified and augmented this
and John VV. Noble made the final
changes. 1
All the leading characters of the play
really spoke Shakespeare's lines while
going through the appropriate action.
Whenever a player forgot a speech
the camera was stopped, and he was
obliged to begin over again.
Several of the greatest theatrical
families of America and England are
presented in the cast, which in
cludes a Booth, a Sothern, a Man-
tell, a Kemble and a Hall Came.
Six hundred players were employ
ed in the production of "Romeo and
Juliet."
Eighteen buildings, reproducing the
old market-place of nicdevial Verona,
were built for the production. A
great storm destroyed these just as
pictures were about to be taken and
they had to be entirely rebuilt at a
total of more than $25,000.

under the manage

Neilson, who can
be seen any night
with her bright,
cheery smile at the

her show any niglr

taing about the show that Mrs. Neil
son is not directly responsible for is
the music, and the musicians are out
siders, so to speak. Her oldest son
handles the machines and looks after
the picture bookings; another son re
lieves the patrons of the tickets they
have just bought, and a little daugh
ter helps generally, so that accounts
for the ever-present smile which
seems to be a habit with Mrs. Neilson.
However, she can be pretty rough at
times, she says, and she named sev
eral exchange managers who would
testify to the same, because she in
sists on having the best pictures in
the place and don't leave till she has
them. For today she offers the fol
lowing program: Helen Gibson in
The Engineer's Honor," a drama of
railroad life; "Otto the Reporter" and
"Legal Advice," two good comedies,
and Liberty, the American border se
rial picture. There will be no show
Wednesday night.
