Mr. Zonne showed where the bar produced the major part of the rev enue of many hotels and in some in stances alone netted the only profits for a hotel. Prohibition would se verely hurt many hotel men, he said. H. C. Heckert of Lexington spoke on the "Opportunities of the Country Motel Merchant. A free discussion of hotel business topics was made by R. W. Johnston of Lincoln, K. L. Word of Grand Island. M. E. Mallorv of Neligh, T. A. Clements of Wilbur. H. H. Reed of Holdrege, C. E. The automobile ride winds up the convention. SWINE SHOW HERE ' WILL MARK EPOCH: Entries From Canadian Line to Gulf and Coast to Coast Are Booked. NINE BREEDS IN CLASSIC When the doors of the big horse barns on the South Side are thrown open on the National Swine Show October 2, the pick of the country's finest porcine stock herds for the first time in the history of the United Sstates will be assembled under one roof. In staging the prepiier swine ex position of truly national scope the promoters have arranged to be brought to Omaha practically every prize winning porker of note In the land. Sectional objections, which were at first advanced by prominent breeders in certain parts of the coun try, have finally been battered down, and now hogmen everywhere are tak ing their hats oft to Omahans for their feat of putting on the first, big i iiBiionai snow. Without exception every hog-rais-ing community from coast-to-coast and from the Canadian line to the Gulf will be represented at the Omaha classic. From the present outlook, in the neighborhood of 3.000 hogs every hog the cream of its particular herd will be shown. Breeders have agreed that this great national event will be no place for mediocre swine; as a result, and in most cases, hog. men have picked out one, two and sometimes three animals for show purposes here. So great has been the interest in the Omaha show that a flood of ap plications for pens has necessitated the superintendent of exhibits, E. Z. Russell, associate editor of the Twen tieth Century Farmer, to arrange for 200 additional pens other than those in the huge horse barns. In one day Thursday Mr. Russell received entries from breeders in the following states: Nebraska, Iowa, Il linois, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Wis consin, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Min nesota and Washington. Every breed of hogs in the United States, with the exception of two which are about extinct, is to be rep resented. Visitors to the show will see the cream of the following breeds: Poland-Chinas. Duroc-Jerseys, Hamp shires, Chester Whites, Iierkshircs, Spotted Poland Chinas, Mulefoots, Tamworths and Yorkshires. There are a few, a very few, herds of Essex stock in the extreme east. There is a doubt if any breeder 'round these parts can reveal the loca tion of any herds of Victorias. These two breeds, what there are left of them, complete, the United States' hogdom. College Men Here Swing to Hughes In Large Numbers The Hughes National .College league, 511 Fifth avenue. New York, is receiving enrollments by the tens of thousands in response to the quar ter of a million letters sent to the alumni of all the colleges in the United States. The work of organiz ing branches in all states and most of the important cities is being actively carried on under the direction of Langdon P. Marvin, an overseer of Harvard university, and Samuel J. Rcid, jr., secretary of the Princeton club of New York. Senator Theodore E. Burton of Ohio is president of the league and George Brokaw Compton is its na tional campaign manager. The cler ical force is overwhelmed with the avalanche of enrollments from all parts of the country, but those tabu lated so far from tins city are: t O. BlRUIfpr, Charlea O. Mr-Donald, T. H. PICKPOCKETS HAVE COMBINE Cohesive Power of Plunder Holds Touchers Together in Gotham. Bury your roll when you come to town. If you don't the "dips" will get it. "There is a powerful nickpocket trust now in operation in New York. It is backed by men of influence, and its members rarely fall into the hands of the police." This statement was made by James E. Smith, district attorney. While he refused to state that certain of the police were working in conjunction with the "trust," he left the inference that a coterie of men of influence who arc behind the "trust" were friendly to many police officers. , "The pickpocket industry," the dis trict attorney continued, "has grown to such an extent that 'pickpocket privileges' can be bought from duly authorized agents as freely as subway tickets. My information is that the organization is not merely a local in stitution, but has a, powerful branch in Chicago and extends into other municipalities. The surface cars are the principal source of revenue for the thieves who stcJ from your pocket. Men upon whom I rely tell me a scale of prices at which priv ileges can be bought has been fixed, also that 'rules for operation' accom pany the privilege." New York Her ald.
