attle on Charge Said Made

Seattle, Waih., Sept 6. (Special
Telegram,) F. J, Richards, president
of the Lincoln (Neb.) Commercial
club, and until recently managing di
rector of the Lincoln hotel in that
city, was arrested at the fashionable
Hotel Washington Annex last night
and spirited away on a steamer at
midnight to Fort Angeles, this state.
When the news of the arrest leaked
out today it caused a sensation here.
Richards spent the day conferring
with Dr. Louis Dechmann, the German
biologist, who recently startled the
scientific world with the culmination
of thirty-two years of research work,
resulting in the alleged discovery of
the secret of the predetermination of
sex.
Returning to his hotel at 6:30 last
nieht. Richards was arrested by a
deputy from Port Angeles. It devel
oped tonight the warrant charged him
with being a fugitive trom justice.
' Held Close Prisoner.
Richards was permitted to get in
touch with a lawyer, bu1: after that
was held incommunicado. Some time
after midnight he was taken to Fort
Angeles. The local police are as much
in the dark as are Richards' friends.
Dr. Dechmann, ; with whom, Rich
ards was to associate himself in the
management of a health resort, had
some bitter law suits with D. E.
Thompson of Lincoln and owner of
a large estate near Lake Cr scent, ad
joining Port Angeles.
Thompson, one-time ambassador to
Mexico, is credited by Dr. Dechmann
with heine? behind the prosecution of
Richards, ts Thompson is the head of
the company owning the Lincoln and
other hotels.
Calls It Ridiculous.
"The arrest is ridiculous," says Dr.
Dechmann. "Richards came to this
state, where Thompson is at present.
He is no fugitive from justice either
here off in Nebraska. His detention
is an Outrage, because he has been
endeavoring to , effect a settlement
with Thompson on the hotel business.
Thompson charges he has been try
ing to hold him up. Richards will be
promptly cleared."
Trouble Over Settleuent.
Frank J. Richards, for ten years
manager of the Lincoln hotel in the
Nebraska capital city, resigned in Au
gust as managing director and at the
same time resigned as president of the
Lincoln Commercial club, declaring
it his purpose to enter into the man
agement of a health resort in the state
of Washington with Dr. Dechmann.
He had trouble in his settlement
with the Thompson Hotel company,
owning the Lincoln hotel. Richards
was owner of the equipment of the
Lincoln hotel saloon and billiard
room with a stipulation that all over
85 per cent of net profits from this
concession was to be kept by mm.
Injunction Dismissed.
A court action and injunction was
begun at Lincoln to prevent Rich
ards from checking out personal
money in a Lincoln bank and to stop
him from disposing of any of the

property in controversy, it being al
leged that no accounting had been
made for a year. This was recently
settled and dismissed and Richards
displayed a check for $1,000 which he
said he had received from the
Thompson Hotel company in full set
tlement. '
It was said at Lincoln last night
that there is no court record of an
action now pending against Richards.
It was impossible to tina legal repre
sentatives of the hotel company who
would discuss the matter last night
Mr. Thompson is not now in Lincoln.

207-mile run from Portsmouth.
The party which included J. S. Pat
terson, C. E. Salisbury, George Lipe
and W. A. Krohn, at Concord, N. H.,
secured moving pictures at the ninth
successive state capital in as many
days. The hard day's run was made
through the White and Green moun
tains, into the Vermont capital. Com
ing through the Green mountains,
grades of ten per cent were numerous
and some as high as fifteen per cent
were encountered.
