STEEL THE MAIN PIVOT New Tork. Aug. 13. Profit taking acted a check on today'a active market but was not especially active until the final hour, when many of the day's gains were re duced or completely efaced. Short celling Induced In partly by the delay In the rail road neeotlatlona at Washington, also served to bring about the late reversal. United statee steel was again ins msin pivot about which the market for the most part revolved. That stock mads a new maximum on Its advance of 34 to 64, from which It tell back to 874, the clos ing quotation. Dealings In steel were so exteneive as to overshadow every other feature of tha market aggregating 360,000 out of a total of 1,076,000 shares. Demand for ralla was most Insistent in the forenoon, Union Paclfle leading at a gross gain of 14, with a further Inquiry for Reeding and Lehlsh Valley as Weil as other eallera, St Paul and Great Northern. All these leeues yielded to toe preseure ot ths sfternoon. together with coppers, Mexi cans and some of the remote war lesuea. Shipping aharoa and the automobile divi sion were again aubjeet to concerted Belling movementa, the former by reason of rumors Indicating another reduction in ocean freight ratea and ths latter as a reeult of the new stock offering of the Wllly'a-Ov-erland. Bethlehem Steel stood out among the high priced epeolaltles by Its further gain of 6 to 484 and Cuban-American sugar lost as much with a moderate recov ery at the end. There was lees activity In miscellaneous er unclassified stocks, those Issues showing no malarial changea. A slight shading of rates to Berlin end Vlenns marked the only change In foreign remit tances, dealings In sterling bills and francs being extremely light. .
