CECIL THOMPSON BLANKS DRUMMERS Keeps Hits Well Scattered and Ambitious Josies Are Out Down on the Runway. Keeping 'Em Scattered BOURSES HAMMER HOVLIK By the limpl method of blanking the Josies in the-- pinchei, Cecil Thompson earned shutout victory over St. Joseph yesterday afternoon, 6 to 0. Cecil was bumped for eight hits, but all the bumping occurred at times inopportune for the Drummers, which is a very good time to have the oppo sition do the bumping. Several times the Drummers got men on base, but always Cecil negotiated to have them cut down there or stranded. Six times Joetown runners were nailed at second or third. On the other hand, young Mr. Hov lilt, who chucks a ball of the fire brand nature, was pretty punk. Or, at least, he was easy for the Rourke sluggers. He was nicked for ten safe swats and the swats came when we wanted them. He also was generous with the free transportation. , First Rrun t Gift. ' The first Roprke run was gift. In the second stania Miller singled and took second on a passed ball, but was caught at third on Krueger'i ground er. Ernie, however, callooed to third , when Cy Forsythe- sunk a tioisyj hit to center. Hovlik hit the clouds for a moment and passed Kilduff, filling . the bases. Then he passed Burg, forcing Krueger over the rubber with the tally that was enough to cop the combat. r ' ' A walk to Kewoie started thinzs in the fourth. Kewpie then stole second and after Burg flew out, Cecil Thompson drew a pass. Krug's triple to center scored both Kewpie and Cecil and the frav was on ice. Cecil Thompson's hit, a walk to Smith, Krug's sacrifice and Fustier' beautiful center-field ' throw scored another in the sixth, and in the eighth a walk to Burg, Cecil, Thompson's sacrifice, Smith s. single and an error by Jourdan gave our heroes two more ; Miller Swats Ball. Fielding nlays by Earl Smith, Shag Thompson and Marty Krug featured the Rourke defensive, while Ray Miller's slugging was of a Ty character. Ray made four hits, one of them a swell bunt. Kewpie Kilduff lugged a limp that would make anybody think he just escaped from the trenches or waa a member of the Yanks. Whether the limn waft caused hv a inn ntn nr whether he did it or the benefit of theies is a mooted issue, but suspicion is strong. Giants and Cubs divided slugging matches today. Er rors helped New York -win the first, 8 to 1, but long hits by the Giants off Prendergast, including a triple by Merkle which cleaned the bases in the fourth inning were big factors. Brown pitched a strong five and two thirds innings and except in the first, Ferritt was invincible' In the second game the Cubs pounded Anderson for six hits in the fifth inning, which with two errors, netted six runs, winning by 8 to 6. A poor throw by Zeider when a good one would have retired the side, gave Robertson, a chance to hit the ball over the fence, with two on bases, in the fifth.
