KILDDFF'S ERROR
LOSES TOR OMAHA
Kewpie Make Wild Throw at
Critical Time and North
Is Vanquished,
ROUKKES HAVE HARD LUCK
Kewpie Kilduff. cut loose a two
base wild throw at a critical time
yesterday and Lou North dropped a
hard-fought pitcher's battle to Rus
sell Ford, 2 to 1. Thus did the
Rourkes open their eighteen-day
home campaign before some 600 vis
iting merchants and a couple of ad
ditional hundred local fans.
KilduSf's costly miscue occurred in
the eighth stanza, when things were
looking pretty rosy for the Rourk
Iets. After Cole had zipped a single
cytr the keystone sack, George Shes
lak directed an easy grounder toward
Kewpie, who fielded it in pretty style.
A double play seemed imminent. But
Kilduff fired the pill a couple of feet
over Marty Krugs head. Before Cy
Forsythe1. could recover the escaped
ball. Cole had negotiated the circuit
as far as third and Shestak was on
second. .-
'. Lloyd Deliver.
North put a lot of stuff on the ball
and managed to whiff Ford. After
stringing along to a three and two
count, Davy Lloyd, who hag always
been a lucky ball playert hhf a puny
blow which bounced over North's
head, rolled over second and into
center field. Lloyd's hit would have
been converted into an out had not
the infield been drawn up for a pos
sible play at the plate. Both Cole
and Shestak romped home ( on the
single. ' .- "
Despite the fact that Omaha lost,
the fans went home well pleased be
cause it was a good ball game. With
out trying to alibi themselves, the
Rourkes can well say they were out
lucked, for every break in the game
went Denver's way.
Ford is Fortunate.
Ford allowed but four hits, but he
was hit hard enough to have given
fourteen. '
In the fourth inning: Marty Krug
opened with a double. Then Thomp
son, on an attempted sacrifice, pop
ed a bunt fly right into bhields
ove. .. .
In the subseauent stanza Forsythe
walked and Kilduff singled with none
out. Joe Burg did the same trick
Thompson, did the second inning
popped "a- 'bunt fly whidh Shestak
caught. - Shestak then doubled For
iythe off second.
Over Fence But Foul.
Bobby. Marshall, opening the
ninth, hit one ' over the fence, but
it went foul. Then he almost
knocked Willis Cole's teeth out with
a line drive to right. Willis threw
up both hands and held the ball.
In the .seventh Ray Miller almost
killed Shields with a liner. That
was th. LtnH nf Inrlr the Rourkes
played in' all afternoon,
The lone tally scored off Ford was
made in the seventh. Alter Miller
went out, Marshall doubled to right
and scored when Forsythe sunk a
neat single into left.
The Rourkes and Grizzlies battle
again this afternoon at Rourke park.
It will be ladies' day. Game called
at 3:15 O'clock.

Pa Rourke Signs
Kid Brother of
. Fleet Earl Smith
Floyd Smith, who is none other
than Earl v Smith's kid brother, has
been signed by Pa Rourke for the
Omaha club. He is. expected to arrive
today.
Floyd Smith does not come to the
Rourkes. as a rookie. He's a bush
leaguer, but no rookie.- Floyd was
with the Henderson team in the Kitty
league. The Kitty league aviated last
Sunday and Floyd was out of a job.
So Fa signed him.
The younger Smith is just 20 years
of age. He throws and bats left
handed, but is otherwise normal He
led the Kitty league ih batting until
the loop blew up, swatting the pill
somewhere around .350.
Earl say his kid brother is O. K.
He is bigger than Earl, and Earl says
he is faster. If he is half as good as
his big brother, however, Omaha fans
will be satisfied.

North Platte Ball Team Disbands.
North Platte, Neb., Aug. 10.-(Spe-cial.)
The North Platte Boosters,
claimed to be the champion semi-professional
team of the state, have dis
banded. The excessive cost of bring
ing teams to North Platte from dis
tant places is given as the principal
cim of the disbanding of the team.
Other towns in the vicinity of North
Platte have no team and it is neces
sary to bring clubs from so far away
that the expense exceeds the receipts
at the gate. During the months that
the North Platte team was in the
field a total of twenty-nine games
were played, the locals winning

OOBB BATS HOME BUN
Detroit, Aug. 10. Philadelphia
wound up its western trip here today
with a 10 to 4 defeat, after getting a
two-run lead. Detroit - tliscovered
Williams' weakness early and bunted
and stole with reckless abandon. Two
safe bunts started the fifth and three
double steals were worked during the
contest.
Mitchell started for Detroit, but
was forced to withdraw at the end
of the sixth because of illness. Burns
also was on the sick list; Cobb, in
the eighth, hit the first home run ever
sent into left field corner inside the
park. The drive usually is good for
two bases, but slow fielding and fast
sprinting let him score handily. Score:

RUPE JT1AJWUAKC.
Rube Marquard, the former Giant,
now pitching for the Brooklyn team,
has never shown greater skill than at
present. He has a hop on his fast
ball, the same old hook curve, good
control and furthermore, seems to
have no end of stamina. Manager
Wilbert Robinson has not overworked
the big fellow, but is saving him for
the final spurt of the season, when
effective pitching will tell the most

Scouts Watch Omaha
i hree big league scouts breezed
into Omaha with the Rourkes yester
day. They are Charley Barrett of
the St. Louis Browns, Chick Fraser
of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Joe
Ktlly of the New York Yankees.
They are expected to stay here a few
days and it is believed they will be
joined by a couple of other ivory
hunters today or tomorrow. '-
Earl Smith. Kewpie Kilduff and
Ernie Krueger are the magnates at
tracting the scouts. All of them look
like big league timber to the eagle
eyes of the scouts. Smith especially.
It's a cinch Rourke will lose at least
one of the above trio this fall. If he
doesn't sell the draft will be sure to
catch one of them.

Lincoln County Board
Promises to Settle Claim
(From a Staff Correspondent) -Lincoln,
Aug. 10. (Special.)
While the Lincoln County Board of
Commissioners was in Lincoln attend
ing a meeting of the State Board of
Equalization State Auditor Smith
took advantage of the opportunity to
inform them that Lincoln county had
not liquidated its $6,000 claim of the
state on the old insane account. The
board claimed that they had an offset
against other counties for care of
these same patients and for that rea
son had been waiting to have those
claims settled. The auditor informed
them that the state had nothing to
do with their claims against other
counties, but would hold Lincoln
county for the amount. The board
signified its intention to take up the
claim,
