The Rourkei completely apoiled the
afternoon for in imbitioui yoong min
ntmed Burwell jrciterday, and in
cident cleaned up Topeln, 10 to 4,
evening up the (erlee. f; '
Burtfell, who bounced into the
Topeka lineup from goodnen knows
where, i( willing worker who tries
to throw the ball pait the batten. His-
aucceu was not remarkable. I ne nan
came up to the plate with plentv of
speed and little else, ana most oi tnc
time it was right in the alley. - '
Andy how the Rourkes loved it
Earl Smith whaled out a home run
to open the game, he being the first
man at bat. The ball cleared the
Titrht field fence and bounced off the
Metz sign. Krug w(S safe on Good
win ( error, and when snag inomp
son bunted to Burwell the , latter
chucked the ball over Agler'i head,
and everybody wa( (afe. s I .. '.
Miller then dumped another bunt in
- Burwell's direction', which the latter
fielded, but, not desiring to throw the
ball away as he had done on the pro
ceeding play, waited long enough for
Miller to reach first before he at
tempted to mike the play. That filled
the sacks, y 4 . ' . v, : ; i
f Making a CleavvUp' "
The clean-up brigade then got busy.
Krueger'a smashing single to left ac
counted for. Krug and J. Thompson,
snd Forsythe's double to center put
Miller and Krueger over the plate.
Burwell then stiffened and retired the
side in one-two-three order. '"
That made five rune, and as" the
Kawa managed to land but four dur
ing the afternoon, the other Rourke
scorei were of minor , importance
However, three of them were made
in the fourth on singles by Krug and
Miller, an error by Goodwin which let
Krug score, and Krueger's home run,
a hard drive to lett which got by
everybody and escaped pursuit long
enough for Ernie to negotiate home.
The other two were scored in the fifth
on Kilduffs triple; an error which
gave) Pete a chance to acore and put
Burg on second from where he got
round the sacka on C. Thompson's
sacrifice, and Smith's sacrifice fly.
After the fifth Mr. Engle, who man
age( the Kawa, decided that it would
be inhuman to permit the Rourkei to
hive any more fun with Burwell, and
- took him out of the box. Doyle (top
ped the home guard short. -,
Thompson had one bad inning, the
1 third. " Allen singled to Center, and
Burwell fanned. - Kilduff muffed De
vore's grounder, Allen going to sec
ond, and on a beautiful hot-and-run
play Agler doubled to the center field
fence, (coring Allen and Devore with
room to spare. Engle's (ingle to left
scored Agler, but Goodwin fanned and
Schweitzer grounded out.
Cochran's double, an infield out and
Allen's, infield single scored the other
Ksw run in the sixth. .
Smith H(( Great Day.
Smith's all around play was the fea
ture. He copped a homer in the first,
drove in another run with a Sacrifice
. fly, i caught Engle at second by quick
fielding after he had landed an appar
. entry cinch double, and also made a
backward leaping catch of a high drive
by Defate.
The game wound up the Topeka
series, and Denver is on the bill this
afternoon, auto race or no auto race.

KOOB MISSES THIRD BASE
- -Boatoiv July 14-Boston ind . St.
Louis played seventeen innings with
out (coring today, the game being
called-on account of darkness. The
visitors would have tallied in the fif
teenth had not Koob failed to touch
third base when he came from second
on a drive to left by Miller. Koob's
omission was detected and he was
tagged by McNally. after Mays had
been knocked down at the plate. Mays
was not seriously hurt, but he retired
from the contest.
The game was largely one of de
fense, both teams making some pretty
plays. Repeatedly they were in a
position to score, but either the pitch
ers tightened ud or a brilliant fielding
play prevented a run. The tie will be
played off as part of a double-header
tomorrow, score:
