(Signed) WILLIAM C. HOOK, United States Circuit Judge. Dated July Id, llll. 810JylO-17-4-ll With a county veterinary health officer in every county of the itate, Nebraska could have saved the swine growers $900,000 last year, according to Dr. R. C. Moore of St. Joseph, Mo., who made a general talk upon animal health in responding to an address of welcome for the Missouri Valley Vet erinary society, in convention at the Hotel Castle. Dr. Moore pointed out that, accord ing to government figures, $75,000,000 worth of hogs died of cholera in the United States during 1915. Accord ing to the same statistics, he showed that Nebraska had lost nearly $2,000,- 000 worth of swine the same way dur ing this period. "I believe the day will come," he said, "when every county will have its health officer, a competent veterina rian, paid by the county, to look after the health of the domestic animals with reference to the spread of con tagion." Hesitate to Call Veterinarian. The speaker pointed out that a farmer may sometimes hesitate to call a veterinarian when he has a sick hog on the place, because he lives ten or a dozen miles from town, and he feels that the fee for the veterinarian will be as much, or half as much, as the hog is worth. Thus, he pointed out, it does not become known whether this hoe has cholera or not. borne have it and infect the rest of the herd. The herd may in the meantime be wandering about in the pastures and sDreadinsr the disease among the herds of the neighbors, whereas if the coun ty maintained a county veterinarian he could be called without expense to this farmer and institute the right kind ot a quarantine or safeguard at once. The program for Monday was large lv comoosed of technical papers. Tues day the visiting doctors will attend a clinic at the horse and mule barns on the South Side, with luncheon on the grounds. Officers for the coming year will be elected Tuesday, and the third and concluding session on Wednesday will include papers and discussions of veterinary problems. The second floor of the Hotel Cas tle is given over to several complete displays of veterinary instruments, ap paratus and medical supplies. The meetings will be held in the conven tion hall of the hotel, where moat of the doctors are making headquarters. Owing to a delay in obtaining the gasoline, darkness had fallen before Morissey and Hook again reached the island where Hope and Cleo were awaiting them. Just as they beached their skiff on the shore of the little cove, they vere startled to hear from somewhere on the cliff above them, the roar of an explosion. Thoroughly alarmed, they raced up the steep and uMnriino- nnth which led to the olsteau. Morissey, reaching the top ahead, of his ponderous companion, dashed toward the shack in which they had left Hope and Cleo. Suddenly he stopped, An exclamation of horror, iminnvnt utter incredulity, escaped him. The shack was gonel Save for a few splintered timbers, the rock on which it had stood was absolutely bare. , , "Mr. Hope I" hailed Morissey, with sinking heart. "Mr. Hopel Where are vnil?" "That you, Morissey?" came Hope's voice from the darkness. fi "Aye, aye, sir," in a tonff of pro found relief. "What's happened, sir? Where's the shack!" "I hardly know myself what has happened," said Hope, appearing out of the darkness with Cleo, "but I strongly suspect that someone has tried to murder us." "We were sitting in the shack ex amining the books," explained Hope. "We were wondering what had de layed you. All at once Miss Burke said that she heard a noise under the house. She stepped to the door to see what it was and a moment later I heard her scream. I ran out to see what the trouble was, but I had scarcely set foot outside the ' door when there was an explosion that threw us both to the ground and the shack toppled over the cliff into the sea." ' "But what was it you heard under the house, Miss Cleo?" asked Hook, his eyes bulging with excitement. "It sounded as though someone was moving about just underneath us," she replied. "At first I thought it was an animal, but, as I opened the door, I. heard someone running away. I stepped down so that I could look underneath the house and I saw a spark running along the ground in the darkness, I called to Jarvia Mr. Hope, I mean to come quickly, for I felt sure that there was -danger threatening us, and, just as he reached me, came . the explosion. " When, I looked for the shack it had disap peared." ' . . . ' . - ' ' Have you any idea wno did it, sir?" asked Morissey. "Do you think it could have been the lap?'- "Yes," said Hope, thoughtfully, "it may have been Satsuma. He't the only one who could have any object in doing such a thing. We know tnat ne ana tne man wno was witn him are after the books, and they're the kind that would stick, at nothing in order to get them." . '.': "By the way, Morissey," he added, : 'did you remember to send that tele gram from Middle island?" 1 did, sir," was the answer. 'What was the telegram. Jarvis?" asked Cleo. "You remember ' that Fitrmaunce told us that he had bought three of your father's books at the auction, but that he had lent one of them to a friend, a Doctor Owen, who lives at Sandsboro? . He turned to Cleo. "It ia to late that there ia no use In our trying to reach Sandsboro tonight. I think that we. had better make straight for San Francisco and run down to Sands boro tomorrow." V :. The Sea Hawk was barely a mile off Middle island, toward which it was heading, when it struck the float ing mine, so that only a few minutes elapsed before the sailors attached to the radio station, attracted by the flash and roar of the explosion, had launched a boat and were pulling to ward the scene of the disaster. Of the Sea Hawk all that remained were a few riven timbers. Clinging to one of these timbers the rescuing party found a man and a woman, both in the last stages of exhaustion, t They urerr Gerald Morton and Olara Ivan- off. There was no sign of the cap tain and the two sailors. All three had evidently perished. - : Olga and Morton, though badly bruised' and suffering from shock, were otherwise uninjured, but not un til the following morning were they sufficiently recovered to give a co-1 herent account of themselves. Even then thev were unable to throw any light on the mystery which enveloped the explosion. All they could tell their rescuers was that they had en gaged the Sea Hawk for the trip to Middle island, where they had im portant business with a man named Fitsmauruee, and that, when only a short distance off the island, there had come a terrific explosion. Fur ther than that they knew nothing. "By the way," asked Morton, as he concluded his itory, "is Mr. Fits maunce nerei --n i "No," t waa the answer, "He left yesterday morning in his sailboat for one of the North Farallons and he hasn't returned. He has probably been delayed by the storm, but he ought to be back at any moment" (To Be Continued Tomorrow.) i 'V
