MARSHALL'S HOMER
1TSH0HEYICT0RY
Catcher Bobert Poles Ball Over
WaU for Two Buns With
Rourkea One Behind.
Four Out of Five
ALSO MAKES TWO SOOBZS
""""" -
- Robert Marshall, who u doing all
of the catching for the de luxe Rourk-
lett these days while Ernie Kreuger
- convalesce in the hospital v where
there are a lot of pretty nurses,
combed a home run over the right
field wall yesterday afternoon, A few
' minutes later obsequities were held
over a gent named Isbell and a flock
of athletes from Dei Moines.
. Marshall' circuit clout came in a
pinch in the eighth inning and' gave
the Rourkes the fray by the narrow
margin of 6 to 5. Hie victory made
it four opt of five on thrteriet from
Des Moines and six out of nine on
the entire home series.
When Robert cracked the homer
things were looking pretty sad for
the home guard. It was the eighth
frame and the despised Booster were
leading S to 4. Burg and Shag
Thompson had gone out. But Miller
walked. And then Marshall hove in
to view. Bang. The fan felt a flut
tering of the heart and a tingling of
the spine, They saw the pill float
merrily over the right field fence
while Noodle Haha turned hit
gloomy orbs upward and got ready
to pay off. ; f "i
, '., Make Twa Other Hit.
The home run wa not the only
contribution Mr. Marshall made 'to
' the Rourke victory. He made two
other hits, on of which sent a run
home, and the other gave him a
chance to circle the paths on lubte
quenjt drives by hi playmate.
Kewpie Kilduff tried to (wipe some
. of the honor from Marshall and
succeeded pretty well Kewpie play
ed a bang-up game at thort that
brought the stands to cheer several
times.
The Rourke blow the tillage to
day, starting a brief road trip at Sioux
City tomorrow. , They come home
July 6 for a run of eighteen games.
Bears Shut Out by
Wolves of Wichita
Wichita, Kan., June 27. Davis,
pitching for Wichita, held Denver to
five scattered hits, while hit team
mates clouted out eleven safe hits and
coupled wtih twelve passes issued by
the Griizliet' pitchers, easily shut out
the visitors and won, 1) to 0. The same
teams will play a third game tomor
row. Score:

HERE'S HOW STECHER
ONCE LOST TEMPER
Strangler's Footwork Got Joe
Peeved and as a Besult He
Stayed Two Hours.
THIRSTING FOB VENGEANCE
BY ED. W. SMITH.
If you've ever seen Joe Stecher,
Nebraska's wonderful wrestler, and
noted his incomparable smile in the
ring, even when battling was hottest,
you never could imagine this great,
big kid of a farmer boy ever losing
his temper, could you?
One never could think that Joe,
the personification of good temper
and high-grade sportsmanship, ever
Could get really angry in the ring.
Yet he did, and it lost him a match
that many good critics sitting at the
ringside said he should have won. It
was his first match with Ed Lewis,
the Kentucky strangler, and took
place in Evansville, Ind., last Octo
ber. This is one of the many good
reasons why the return meeting be
tween this pair, set for Gene Melady's
Douglas county, fair grounds arena
on the Foarth of July, should be one
of the greatest athletic exhibitions
that ever took place in any ring.
Stecher did not expect any more
trouble with Lewis when he made the
first match last fall than he had had
with any of the other men of medium
class. He thought it would be all
over well inside of thirty minutes,
and that is the way they were betting
on it.
But Lewis gave him a lot of worry.

greatest wrestlers on his feet that the
world ever saw, Lewis went in there
to stay.. And stay he did, with a ven
geance. At the end of an hour, de
spite a broken finger, received in
snatching for a hold around Stecher's
shoulder, Ed was there fighting like
mad and then it was that Stecher
completely forgot himself and lost his
temper.
Further, Joe didn't regain his usual
good temper until at the end of an
hour and three minutes the referee
called it a draw. Toe was mad
through and through by that time at
his failure to upset the Kentucky
gladiator, and thfs militated strongly
against his chances of winning. He
was so angry that he was blind to
several good chances that he got to
get his famous body scissors on the
foe. Even the careful Hetmanek and
Brother Joe couldn't calm Joe.
That's why we think he will try
and get good and even with Lewis
when they meet on July 4 in Omaha.
