With more than 150 race horses in
camp and additional strings arriving
on nearly every train, the prospects
look brighter and more promising
each hour for an unusually tuccessful
threo days' turf festival at the Benson
track Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
There is no getting around the fact
that the field of starters in the Doug
las County Fair association's open
ing meeting on the Nebraska Midway
Racing circuit will be one of the larg
est in the history of the sport in this
section of the country.
The early meeting at Benson, com
ing as it does as the season's premier
in a year that has witnessed a notable
revival of harness racing in all parts
of the country, and especially so in
Omaha, promises to draw record
breaking crowds.
Some of the leading horsemen of
the country are here for the three
gala days of f.peed events, having in
tow pieces of horse flesh known in all
parts of horscdom for their classiness
and lacing qualities. When Starter
F. D. Van Pelt gives the drivers the
call at 1 :30 o'clock Thursday after
noon it is safe to say that; the total
number of starters for the three days'
meeting will have reached 140.
: Gould on the Job.
Several new arrivals have checked
in at the Bt:nson plant in the last
twenty-four hours. One of the best
known strings to swoop down upon
(he track was that owned by K. D.
f'iould of the Midway Stock Farm,
Kearney, Neb.
Mr. Gould is one of the biggest
breeders of race horses west of the
Mississippi ami occupies an enviable
place in the turf world, His string,
consisting of ten keen looking horses,
i: in charge of Ben Rhodes, another
well known Nebraska horseman.
Some of the racers in the Midway
Stork Farm delegation that the rail
birds lamped with approval were:
Last Chance, a pacer; Midland, a
nice looking 3-year-old pacer; A 1 lie
Axwood, a pretty green trotter; Em
press Togo, a pacer; Aldia Todd and
Lady South, a couple of .5-year-olds
of class; Bird Maxcl and Betsy Girl,
-yrar-olds.
Opinions have hern frequently ex
pressed since the string arrived that
the racing fans will be writing Mr.
Gould's name on the programs be
fore the week is over.
Colorado Nags Arrive.
Another recent arrival of note was
J MacDermid of Colorado Springs,
Colo,, who brcered into the Benson
quarters with ten head.
The Benson track has been well
taken care of this spring and its care
ful conditioning shows up at this time.
The oval is in shape fur real horse
racing on a scale that is inoculating
the ttillower of the sport with rate
enthusiasm.
