ft THE BEE : OMAHA. THURSDAY. JUNE 1. 1!1r.. ft i L sJ SHE SAYS FLAG IS PIECE OFJIMING Miss Myers of Fainsm Sd'ool Make: Singular Remark in Talking to a Class. EXPLAINS WHAT SHE MEANS "Compared to human life the flag 1 is merely a piece cf bunng," Mt li Fannie layers, eighth B teacher at Farnam school, addressing her room during Memorial day exercise held in connection with the history les son of the class. Why She Said It. "Yes, that is what I did say to the children," replied Miss Myers when questioned, "and I would like to ex plain just how I made that state ment. We were discussing war and its relations to the flag. There was a flag ill the room at Uie time. 1 am much nppoi to war I told the children that President Wilson has fchown us that it is not necessarv to KO to war for every littlr affair, -We went to war over the Mowing up of the Maine, and I don t believe we would go to war over that today, iJo you think so.' I meant no disre hpect to our flag. I was merely Mat ing that human life is of lirbt consid eration. We are wont to carry a chip on our shoulder. The conflict in Europe has shown us the aufulness of war. l ive years ago 1 told the children we would have no more war." Did Not Weigh Her Vords President Krnst of the Board of Education was asked whether he be lieved such reference to the hag tend ed to instill the best form of pa triotism. "I would say that the teacher did not weigh her words. As to her exact meaning, as she understood her own words, that is another matter. 1 would be slow to entirely condemn or approve until I knew all of the facts, said Mr, Ernst Superintendent draff is inclined to the opinion that Miss Myers meant well. As to the indiscretion of referring to the flag as a piece of hunting in the presence ot impres sionable children, he did not care to , commit himself, Superintendent Will Inquire "I would want to determine, first just what form of patriotism is gen erally taught in this room and the. if fetts of such teaching before I passed on this case, said the superintendent "1 realize it is easy to place a wrong construction upon the statement of a teacher. 1 will be pleased to investi gate the situation. As for Miss Myers, J would say that she has been in the schools fifteen years and I have re garded her aa a splendid teacher." Miss Myers' statement, however. has aroused some protest from school patrons, who do not believe any teacher should refer to the flag as a "piece of bunting." Butchers Complain Of the High Cost of All Kinds-of Meats Meat market proprietors are a sorry lot these days. They are com plaining of conditions and say they not only cannot make any money but will have hard work to exist if pres ent conditfons keep up long. Collec tions, they say, are bad because of the strike, and on top of that the wholesale prices of meats are soaring fast. Within the last week the price of beef has gone up 6 cents a pound, lamb 5 cents and pork .1 cents. Hams and bacon have risen 3 cents. And ' besides there is a falling off of busi ness of about 50 per cent. Cupid Stubbendorf Prepares for Bride As they say in court house peti tions, comes now the June bride and bridegrooms to make the marriage li cense clerk put in the busiest period of the year. x Figures show that June is the month in which the record number of marriage licenses are taken out. This year, being leap year, Marriage Li cense Clerk Stubbendorf predicts an unprecedented number of applicants for the privilege of traveling in "dou j uir names. The court house "cupid" is filling his inkwells, sharpening hi-, peiuiN and getting out evtra blank-, with the idea of doing a land olfire business starting Thursday morning, June I. Ure Still After Autoists Who Have No 1916 License Several South Side residents com plain because some Onniha automo bilists are running loose without 1U license number on their machines. In that connection Treasurer Ure says: We had a man sut for several weeks checking up these delinquents and it is my opinion that only a few have thus far evaded the law. If any citizen knows of an automobile owner who does not have this year license and he will send us the infor mation, we will file a complaint," The authorities at Lincoln are after delinquent motorists who have failed to comply with the law as to license George Leffi inghouse bought a car in Omaha a few days ago and drove it to Lincoln, where he was promptly arrested because he did not hae 1I6 license number. His machine car ried a piece of cardboard with one ot the slock numbers ot a dealer, vim the notation, "I icense applied for. When hidae Stevens imposed fine of J7.J0 and io,ts he remarked that Omaha may have laws of its own. but they do not apply to Lin coin. Builders Peeved Over Resolution of City Couuci Though ilhere had hern some talk of a resumption of work by the build ing laborers after Memorial Hay, the Mtuatiou stands much a. it did. The strikers are still out, and the half finished building jobs aie without activity. Hie city council has made no further erfort since a week ago to bring about a conference between contractors and strikers. After the council sent three separate and di tuirt calls or invitations to the build ers, members of the Builders' lix change, to ask them to confer with the representatives of the Central Labor Union at the council chamber the commissioners now say they arc through with the matter. Not a little irritation was caused among the builders by the resolution passed by the council at that time, stating that the building laborers had been underpaid, or that the wages were too low. Boosters for the Athletic Club to Meet This Evening One hundred boosters for the new Athletic club of Omaha wilj dine at the Fontenelle hotel this evening, when some of the details of the new club will be discussed. Since the lots have been secured and the financing of the proposition is practically as sured the next question will be the style of the building and the architect A limit of 1,(K'0 has been placed on the membership so that many are hurrying to get in under the wire be fore the list is closed.
