MACHINISTS JOIN
IN STRIKE MOVE
Left Their Work Yesterday--
Bnflflers Do Not Met With
the Council,
THEY DEMAND , CLOSED SHOPS
.iae.hirrsts in the various plants in
the etty went on strilte to the number
of perhaps a fwinrh-exl or more yester
day mortrinff at 10 o'clock.
This was the. hour at which the
machinists demafxled a definite reply
to their demarKis. In other words, the
ultimatum expired at this hoar, and
at that time anywhere from a half
dozen to fifteen or twenty walked out
of the various manufactaring plants
where this clas of labor is employed.
When the demand were not met
at the Baker Ice Machine company
the men walked into the office, some
ten in number, received their pay to
date and left the plant.
A dozen went out at the Sunder
land Machinery and Supply company.
At the 1 'a i ton & Vierltna: Iron works
officials were. loth to talk about this
situatRin, and all they wonM say over
the phone when asked if their machin
ists bad none out was, we aoni
know; we can't answer your ques
tion.
Want Eight-Hour Day.
the machinists demand an eight-
hour day and 50 cents an hour.
They demand that ail men em
ployed in the shops as macnmists
telong to the international union in
Machinists.
Thev demand that no man not a
member of the union be allowed o
lo anv work in tearing down or dis
mantling a machine that may come in
tor repairs.
Ihey desire to allow tne manu
bcrturine comnanv to employ one
apprentice to every five machinists.
In connection witn tneir uemann
for an eight-hour day tlu-y demand
that from the close of the eight-hour
day until 10:30 at night time and a
half be paid. After lU'.JU, Mmdays
and holidays they demand double
time.
The machinists have been getting
40, 45 and 47'A cents in the various
plants.
Machinists Go Out.
Up to 1 o'clock Monday afternoon
the walkout of machinist had been
reported from the following shops;
Baker Ice Machine company, Sunder
land Machinery and Supply company,
Joe Davis, Carl Anderson Auto re
pair, Omab Electric Works, Mel
choirs, Omaha Machine Works, Pax-ton-Mitchell,
Paxton-Vierling, Phil
lips k Son, John son-Dan forth.
The iron molderi, too, went out at
Pax ton-Mitchell's.
"The principal bon of contention
is the eight-hour day and the 50-cent
rate," said Sam Grace, general or
ganizer of the machinists.
Mr. (rrace, woo ra an omini man,
resents the assertion made that out
side agitators are taking the lead m
thia fioht. He calls attention to the
fact that he is an Omaha man, has
his residence here, and that he has
recently been in Kansas Gty, but was
recalled to Omaha when the local
matter came up.
Not Strike Yet.
In b tt irrn cot Mr. Grace said "We
don't call this a strike yet. Notwith
standing that work has been sus
pended, we are simply showing dis
approval of th propositions pre
sented to us by the employers' com
mittee with which we nave oeen
meeting occasionally lately. Though
has been suspended we are still
willing to take up the negotiations
where thev were discontinued."
The machinists have been holding
numerous conferences during the last
few weeks with the employers com
mittee, J. L. Baker of the Baker Ice
Machine comoanv is chairman of the
committee and G. C. Edgerly of Sun-
Builders Do Not Appear.
Riiildimr contractors were not rep
resented at a conference called by
Artintr Mavor Butler In the city
council chamber. Committees of
the striking laborers and Central
Labor union outlined to the city of
ficials their positions in the strike
situation. Another effort is being
made by the city commissioners to
arranue a conference between all
sides of the labor controversy.
President Reynolds of Central La
bor union, (... 1.. .Shamp and John
Casson of the building laborers spoke
to the thv commissioners.
Mr. Shainii, prominent in organized
labor affairs, aid: "This controversy
lias gone loo far to ask the men to
waive their union recognition.
"The contractors are maintaining a
car-hke attitude," staled Mr. Rey
nolds, when announcement wss made
that the building contractors had not
responded to an invitation by the act-
in if mavor to attend nte conierence.
The second invitation lent by the
mitre council read! that the contract
or be "invited and urged.
More than .1X) of the sinkers were
present at a meetm1 held m the city
count il chamber in the afternoon.
