WORKERS REJOICE
ATMSTOFFICE
Increase of Ten Men in Mail Clerical
Force Meets With Much
Favor.
EFFICIENCY" HAS AN INNING
There in much rejoicing at the
local poiitoffice over the granting bv
the Pontofficc department of an in
crease of ten turn in the mail clerical
force, which was recently secured
through the efforts of Postmaster
Wharton.
I'hr office lias hem rushed tre-
nipiutotiftly with the increase of busi
ness, ami only because of the efficient
ailiiimistratioti by the postmaster am!
the Miprrintendent", and good tearn
work bv the force of clerks, has the
work been put through with dispatch
and accuracy.
Ellifirncy has hart nwite a trial
in the postal system of t:ie country in
the last few years. The "experts"
have bad their inning. They have
tried their theories out on the human
machined. The theories worked fine
011 paper, but when "tried 011 the
iIok ' they didn't work out quite o
well.
The introduction of the gtop-watch
teats met a stnrtn of protest, but they
went on jtit the same. An efficiency
"expert" would stand over a clerlt
with bis feiop-waich and find out jiiit
how many pieces of mail he distrib
uted per mintiie and what his battint:
average of accuracy was. Then they
maile up great charts and fixed a
aiauutii 11,
Many Men Resigned.
lly the time they had theoretically
cut down the force very materially
they found men resigning by the
wlioicnale, particularly lrom the
night force, where the efficiency
lesis showed that a man should dis
tribute thirty pieces of mail per min
ute for eight hours without dropping
from exhaustion. In one olhce .0
per cent of the night force resigned.
it is pointed out by men in the
very efficient Omaha office that the
efficiency engineer and scientific
managers" never were allowed lo
drive the ineit in the Omaha office.
and yet the work here has been done
right along witli a surprisingly small
force of workers. The Omaha of
fice has, it is said, the most expert
force of mail clerks in the country.
One man knows 16,000 postoffices
and can "route" them unhesitatingly,
changing the "routing" as the clock
advances, so that the mail is dis
patched by a later train over some
other railroad after one train has
gone, it is a marvelous accomplish
ment and one which require an hour
of study daily after hi regular work
is done.
Charges Lawyers
Took Her Property
Through a Trick
That her lawyer played her false
and through fraud obtained for their
own use her property i the, charge
made against Attorney Joseph O.
Burger and H. Glenn Moran by Leila
Douglas, in a petition' filed in district
court.
She claim that the defendant ob
tained a divorce for her from Albert
Alexander, her former husband, and
in the settlement the received certain
real estate. This property, the lays,
Moran and Burger induced her to
turn over to them, upon the repre
sentation that she would lone it
otherwise, a it might be seized in
payment of her former husband's
debts. After he transferred the
property he learned that it wa im
ply a trick, nhe allege.
She asks the court to set aside the
transfer and restore the property to
her.
Attorney Burger, speaking for
himself and for Attorney Moran, in
dignantly denies the charge. He de
clare that with Moran he helped her
to get the divorce and took care of
her legal business for a period ex
tending over everal month and that
neither he nor Moran got anything
except the fee to which they were
legally entitled.
