tectives recovered part of the stolen
property in an alley back of the

thieves, who ransacked several
rooms, stealing a wedding ring be
longing to Mrs. Patton. The ring
was a tamiiy heirloom.
Prying open a window in the rear
of the building, burglars entered the
office of the Omaha Warehouse com

the vault, according to a report made

Somewhere in Omaha a young
man named Jack Branson is chuck
ling over the wisdom of the law
makers in Lincoln who at a recent
session of the legislature passed a
stringent "loan shark" law. He is
also contemplating with some satis
faction the fact that he will not be
forced to return in a hurry ten "iron
men" lie. borrowed not long ago in
a "pressing emergency."
Justice 1L II. Claiborne tells of
the affair at follows, mentioning the
fact that the rase in point is the first
started since the new legislation was
enacted :
"Voting Bronson borrowed $10 of
the Cox company in the I'axton
building, giving his note for $12, the
same to be paid within a certain
time. He failed to settle as agreed
anil the Cox company brought suit.

fore Justice Vincent C, Hascall.

"I was retained by Branson to
defend him. In filing my answer
to the suit i mentioned the fact that
the company appeared to have, rieg

would be usury and pointed out the
provision in the law that any viola

morning K. Leslie Hyde, counsel for
the company, came in and lore up
the papers."

Now that the Interstate Commerce Com
mission has refused to suspend the new
passenger rates, which Manager McVann
of the Commercial dub's trafflo bureau
alleged to be unfair lo Omaha, tha next
step will prohubly be to attack the rates
as discriminatory.
Mr. McVann reported to the exemitlve
eommlltae of the Commercial club at
noon with regard to tha refusal of the
commission to suspend the rales, which
went Into effect Monday.
Tha executive committee will decide
definitely what atop they wish tha traffic.

of Kansas City in tha matter of railway
fares to Chicago and other eastern

CATHOLIC ACADEMY AT
ST. JOSEPH IS CLOSED
St. Joseph. Mo May Id Orders
to close the Academy of the Sacred
Heart of St Joseph were received
here today from the headquarters of
that organization in Rome. The acad
emy was established here sixty-three
years ago. There are thirty-tive
nuns attached to the institution, the
majority of whom probably will bo
transferred to umaha.
The mother superior at Saord
Heart academy in this city said the
report that the nuns from the bouse
in St. Joseph, soon to bt dosed,
would come to Omaha was on true, go
far as she knew. It was probable, she
said, that they would be distributed
among different houses. The matter
could not be decitled before summer
because the school is not yet closed.
There will remain one other Catholic
school in St. Joieph after this ons ii
closed, she said.
