M. Orschel Com pany Hangs to Door Casing as Building Collapses. FIVE THOUSAND DAMAGE DONE Clinging to a door casing, A. M. Peterson, 2214 North Nineteenth street, manager of the II. M. Orschel company, with office on the second floor of the Aivsrican Supply com pany building, 1102-4-O Farnam street, barely escaped death Sunday afternoon, as the floor beneath the store' rooms collapsed sending six carloads of roofing material to the ground below. The air pressure cansed by the collapse of the floor broke the large plafe glass windows in the front of the building, scatter ing broken glass over a radius of more than 1011 feet on Farnam street. No one was around the place at the time of the accident save Mr. Peter son. The building is owned by the Creighton real estate company. Mr. Peterson came to the offices yesterday morning preparatory to doing some work on the books of the company. Shortly after noon he heard a peculiar sound, which later proved to be the timbers breaking. Has Narrow Escape. Leaving the office lie began a lour of the building trying to locate the sound. Coining to the store rooms, he wa', about to enter when the floor suddenly colUosed, leaving him hanging to the edge of ihe door, Finally releasing his hold he slid down among the debris, sustaining a few scratches about the face and arms. Investigation showed that the en tire west side of the second floor, which is occupied by the store rooms of the Orschel company, had cracked in two in the middle, throwing the entire contents upon the stock of the F. ly-Norris Safe company, who oc cupy the first floor beneath, doing serious damage to several carloads of new safes ust .received by that concern. The stork of the Orschel company was damaged very slightly, however. Weight Not Excessive. The weight upon the floor wa estimated at 200 tons, which is much under the rating given it by the building inspector, according to statements made by members of the two concerns last night. "This building when occupied by the Fairbanks-Morse company some years ago has held up loads that were many times as heavy," said G. K. McBridr, manager of the American Supply company, while speaking of the accident. J.ach of the companies in the building will be open for business to day, according to statements of the owners, a large corps of laborers having been placed upon the scene clearing away the debris. It is thought the damage will amount to nearly $5,000. ' Chicago Planning For Parade and Patriotic P-ally Chicago, III., May 15. A call will be issued today by William Mathew Lewis, secretary of the Illinois Naval league, to business and professional men, officials of commercial organ izations and civil organizations to formulate plans for a preparedness demonstration to be held in Chicago similar to that in which 145,000 per sons paraded in New York. Tentative dates suggested are June 10, during the national convention week, and July 4. Ihe earlier date is meeting with favor as it is felt that such a demonstration at the time of the great conventions being held in the city would have considerable effect upon politicians and other vis itors from throughout the country. The Chicago rally, according to promoters, will be representative of the middle west. The demonstration will consist of a great parade, a patriotic rally and oratory by speakers of national fame. Leaders in the movement feel that at least 200,000 persons would be in the parade. POLICE OF LINCOLN HAVE MURDER MYSTERY (From a Stsff Correspondent.)
