OW that we are about to cele
brate a "humane week," Is
there not room for a little en
lightenment concerning the
English aparrow. '
We ii in American people
M
have not been likely to accept any state
ment outright without Investigating, but
It seems that a certain class of would-be
high-brows with less of the love of
birds in their hearts than of love of the
sound of their own voices, relating their
own prowess, have been accepted out
right with regard to the sparrows.
We hear long dissertations ss to their
"excc , t naughtiness." as the Hlble ures
the phrase. How no fair feathered song
Mer will tarry near their abodes; how
they battle with and, It Is assumed, con
quer any bid, great or small, who may
have the audnclty to entor the Hats, and
how ge to food they are not Insectivo
rous, living presumably off something for
bidden, although that something ever Is
left unmenttoned.
I)o we but look hock to the advent of
the Kngllsh sparrow In the. I'nlted States
we find (kindly look yourselves) that In
the year IXiVO a pest of caterpillars swept
tho city parks' of New York. It wss then
that our llttln garnlns were Imported and
they sre said to have saved the day. But
they have o multiplied In thl great
country as to be called by some pest.
Funk & Wsgnall'g small edition warns
rlefly: "The destruction of the spar
rows may he carried loo far. Jn France
for, esample It has been followed by an
Increaae of caterpillars, vastly more de
structive than sparrows."
Now, If one will Investigate, ss I hav
done to my entire satisfaction, end meet
the chsrges frankly, he must find that
the sparrow do not drlv away other
birds. They are Inquisitive, they are nu
merous, they are fierce among them
selves, tireless In building, often building
day after day in an awning which
often is let down with their nest; tena
cious of life, but. they sre amenable to
the lesson of a few good plucking from
(lie other birds. For example: Karly In
April because It waa our first hlrd bog
finished we placed on the telephone pole
t the rear of our yard a large flicker
house, Within a few days a pair of blue
birds came, to Its shelter. It was amus
ing lo see the little beauties flutter In
and out of Its depths. We st once put
out a bluebird house, which they greatly
appreciated and begin at once furnishing.
It has been my custom during th
eighteen year I have lived In Omaha to
feed the sparrows. During the wlnler,
when so little wild life appears on the
landscape, they seem to be especially
acceptable, and like the good wholesome,
hut not a I way esthetic, old time virtues
so fust becoming unpopular.
I find they like bread best of all, will

not eat suet, but are fond of pork and
meat scraps cooked, also potatoes, break
fast food, etc, In severe weather, whep
one wonders that so tiny a scrap of life
can endure the Inclemency of the winter.
I give them seed such aa I feed to my
canaries. In summer I continue the feed
ing bench, adding a drinking basin.
So when the blue beauties came I
was greatly Interested in their antl;s
with the bevy of "talktders." My husband
who loves the blue birds greatly, who
have forsaken our yard for two summers
past, declared against the sparrows, but
upon my apieal waived Judgment until wo
should see positive evidence SKal'i'l
them. For a day or two we watched
closely. I confess I was worried. The
little sparrows were so Interested In the
building of the nest In the house, they
would often accompany the furnishing
to the door and peep saucily In ss ft
was adjusted, Iflbred probably, but what
think you did Mrs. I'lue?
Hhe darted swiftly at them and plucked
and dashed them In no uncertain manner,
giving nolle that she had no taste for
neighboring. Finally, within a few day
her building was an old tory and they
loft her alone. Now she and Mr, lllue
tit above on th wire and look calmly
down upon the feeding bunch, going down
to drink with them and oftlme taking
eed or bread. The blue babies must be
near the hatching now and peace reigns
between tho parents and sparrow,
greatly to my pleasure.
There are two robin In this same yard
who wait about for the occaaional worm
tossed them from the gardening, and who
eat with Die apnrrows, often from the
one niece of bread.
There are brown thrashers contesting
right to a certain tree who also eat with
therrf at times, and who come for water
regularly, and a Jay who make no cour
tesy of helping himself to the lion'
har. I.at summer we had a wood
pecker who dined regularly and who
would sit by and tap loudly end liifdat
ently If no bread were out.
AH these birds, beside wrens, orio'ei
and grosbeaks, have, neon seen at food
or water for seveial years In company
wllh the sparrows, Two days past a
second 1 air of blue birds were line 'llenl
log another house set near. Wo have
had wrens In tho front porch bog for sis
years past. The sparrow are fearful of
Mr, Jenn Wren.
My plea I for all who love and would
njoy bird to look for themselves.
Keep away cat and squirrel If you
would hav birds. I-ast summer the
mother wren lost thre of her five chil
dren within a half hour from the neigh
bor est though I tried to save them,
Flnssy' nature Is her nature ami little '
wren ere not way wise.
Hee that children with popgun learn i
wrm day that w had to cloe th win
dow on one ride of the building. The
children cam to school with dirty hnndt
ond clothes. "
"The practical value of this dandelion
contest was almost nil and the distrac
tion wa the worst I ever experienced,
eoaaldering the real value of the to-called
campaign. I poke to a principal friend
and sh told me she did not hav any
dandelion contest at her school, notwith
standing the circular sent by the super
intendent You Juot ask other principals
snd you will quickly determine the senti
ment which prevails among the teaching

N'EW YORK, N. Y.. Most people fool

renewed health and strength from some

known specialist who has studied widely,
both in this country and Kurope, when,
as a matter of fact, real and true strength
can only Cum from the food you cat.
Hut people often fall to get the strength

their weakened, nervous condition they
know something Is wrong, but they tan t
tell what, so they generally conmi -nee

trouble or avmptonis of some other ail

blood. This thing may go on for years,
while the patient suffers untold agony.
If you are not strong or well, you owe It
to yourself to make the following test.
See how long you can work or how far
vou can walk without becoming tired.
Next take two five grain tablets of
ordinary ungated lion three times per day
after menls for two weeks. Then test
