tion to be settled by the higher court is
whether the state rn control water
rights within Nebraska territory or
whether this right Is vested In the fed
eral government. Botn the'tforth Flatte
attorneys have been active In water
rights litigation, and the state, has un
doubtedly strengthened Its chance for
victory in securing ths aid of these men.
Hope school Saturday night and attended
their dedication exercises. The two rooms
were full. The excellent picture exhibit
from the Lincoln fine aria shop was on
the walls and several pictures were pur
chased and donated to the anhool. Also
the bell fund waa brought close to the re
quired amount.
The teacher are in the old bulldtnix
; and appreciating their home hevnnd
words. I was one of a house party for
tho week-end. but the partv turned into
an unexpected channel, showing that a
teacher age has never been bounded by
required use. The mother of elcht chil
dren In the district died and Miss Harri
son s heart and home opened to tho fam
ily. She had from three to six at the
teacherage for two days and turned her
own wardrobe out to help make clothing
for the needy family. A sewing machine
was writ In from n neighbor's and our
Sabbath waa spent In making clothes for
the children. Monday the school house
whs used for the funeral. Next Sunday
there will be church services there. Al
ready new settlers are coming in be
cause of the good school facilities. Part of

If you can send us more school mothers
like Miss Gene Harrison we shall wel
come them. The year haa been very hard
and lonely for her. but she has made
good.
Lake Alice's teacherage Is doubtless on
the ground now, since ihey were moving
last week.
There Is a big need for these teacher
aues and our three should, bv their use
fulness, be the beginning of many. Espe
cially are they convenient for two-teacher
schools, or those having more than two
teachers.

hauled away and burned.
Ashes should be taken away and dis
posed of.
(Jasollne, naphtha and other volatile
oils should not be kept In buildings.
Open flue hnlea should !e covered and
protected with metal caps.
Electricity, when improperly Installed.
Is a dangeroun fire haxard. Um(i cords
should not be hung on nails or wrapped
around any piping: confer with your city
electrician when chnngea are contem
plated. Do not allow employes or lnex
perlenced persons to tamper with elec
trical Installations.
Never make a bonfire or a fire to burn
rubbish, within twenty feet of any build
ing or near a wooden fence or shed

On March 22 the city of Paris, Tex.,
was almost wiped out of existence by a
conflagration which destroyed property

ance that Nebraska will never be visited
by a like calamity.
The fire commission department of Ne
braska la Interested In making Nebraska
have the lowest fire loss possible, and
every cltlien of the State shouldba In
terested In assisting us In this worthy
purpose. Seventy-five per cent of our
rite loss la due to rarelessneaa and neg- .

(Special.) Last evening a public men1
meeting was held In the parlors of the
Presbyterian church c-f this city in the
interest of the campaign to rid North
Platte of its saloons at the coming elec
tion. About 200 men were present, to
whom lunch was served by the women
of the Methodist, Chrlblian, Baptist and
Presbyterian churches cf this city. Judge
A. L. Sutton of Omaha was the principal
speaker and his address was devoted to j
the wet and dry issue. After Judge But- I
ton's address the meeting was thrown
open to discussion. Among those who j
discussed the question were Attorney J. I
O. Heeler. Howard Watkins, Butler Bu i
chanan, J. H. Van Cleave, Byron Oberat !
and Prof. Redenbaush. Before Judge
Sutton's address Mr. McCombs of the Ne- '
ranka state experimental farm gave a
short address as to tho view of an out- '
alder upon the question.
