CHAPTER IX.
A New Clae.
(Continued from Yesterday.)
"That la all, thank you," Mr. Williams,"
said taxngdon; but while the words were
still on his lips the prosecutor was on
his feet, hot to question the witness, but
to make another eloquent plea to the
Judi-e.
"I petition tha court," he cried In
ringing tones, "to have all the foregoing
testlmnoy, together with that of the de
tective, Brennan, and the boy, Joe Mur
phy, stricken out as Irrelevant. All this
is wasting the time of your honor and
the gentlemen of the jury. It is not what
this man, Daniels, did. but what Mary
1 age did on the night that David Pollock
was brutally murdered with which we
are concerned. The state has proved that
this woman, Mary Page, entered the
room where David Pollock awaited her.
That a shot and a scream came from
that room, and that tne defendant waa
found in the room with the dead body.
And I ask you gentlemen, as reasonable
men. If It Is possible or probable that
anyone could have entered that room and
shot David Polrock without being seen
by the defendant! It is that, I take it,
which my young colleague Is endeavoring
to suggest by throwing suspicion upon a
man who is conveniently missing!"
"And I say," stormed Langdon in re
sponse, "that it was possible and that
Mary Page neither saw nor heard what
occurred in the gray suite that night.
And lf .lt please your honor, I will call
as my next witness. Dr. Foster to testify
to the Inability of the defendant to un
derstand events that were happening."
"I see no objection to such testi
mony." said the judge thoughtfully, add
ing with a hint of sternness, "but you
must remember, sir, that Imputing knowl
edge, even guilty knowledge of the mur
der of David Pollock to this man Darnels
does not prove the defendant innocent."
"No, your honor," answered Langdon,
with a quick, confident smile. "But I
shall prove that, too, before I have fin
ished." The Judge raised his eyebrows, hut that
confidence was not without Its effect
upon those watching the legal duel be
tween the young lawyer and the attorney
for the state, and there waa a breathless
tension in the room when Langdon, ad
dressing his new witness, said vibrantly:
"Dr. Foster, you have told the court
that the defendant, Mary Page, is a vic
tim of attacks of 'repressed phychosls,'
superinduced by tha sight of intoxication,
and the smell of alcoholic concoctions.
When suffering from-, such an attack
would the patient be conscious of what
went on about her?"
"Certainly" not. No more than a per
son In delirium. There are cases of In
sanity where the patient, though Insane,
is still conscious of those around, and can
recognize them; but "repressed psychosis'
Is like violent delirium. Not only Is the
sufferer unconscious of those around her,
but carries no memory of her own ac
tions back Into her normal state."
"Then, If Mary Page waa suffering
from1 such an attack when David Pol
lock was killed, would It not have been
possible for .someone else to enter the
room and commit the murder unnoticed
by herT"
"It would. If Miss Ptge had' one of her
attacks on the night In question she

would have been equally unconscious ot
the fact whether she or someona else
lired the fatal shot." .
A long, quivering gasp pf Ineffable re
lief floated from Mary's pale lips at tha
words, and two little flames of hope and
excitement leapt into her eyes. Her at
last was someone who believed whd un
derstoodthat she did not, could not re
member what had happened after that
first horrible glimpse of the drunken,
leering face of the man she hated.
Kven Langdon had seemed at times to
cherish vsgue doubts snd had pressed her
cruelly to try to- remember even haxlly
the events that were a blank to her;
and In consequence the words of the great
alienist were balm to her aching heart
and seemed In truth a wondrous vindica
tion. .
But the flama of that dawning hops
melted the lea of numb endurance thst
had for so long upheld her, and she was
drawn Inevitably out of the hypnosis of
stolid waiting Into a sudden throbbing
agony or feeling and expectancy. Time,
which until now had seemed of small Im
portanceminutes and hours alike falling)
drearily into the abyss of eternity be
came suddenly a poignant factor. She
wanted to scream to tbem all to hurry
hurry hurry! There was d much to be
told; so much to be explained before they
would know and set her free!
Langdon, watching her In amased con
cern, saw her slender body shake like "
a reed In a storm of emotion, and read
ing In it not the breaking of the icy
fetters of Immobile despair, but tha
shattering of a wonderful self-control, ,
nastened to her slue, witn an admoni
tory and reasmiring whisper of encour
agement. ' To his surprise she smiled at
him through the unshed tears and caught,
his hand for an Instant In a feverish
grip as she murmured tremulously. ,
"There's nothing; the matter, Phil. I
I am Just hopeful." 1
"I may have to call you to the stand
for a little," ha went on anxiously. "Do
you think you you will be able to?"
"Why. of course," she answered, with
such a surprised note In her voice that
Langdon was perforce reassured, and
turned his attention again towards Dr.
Foster, who waa flushing angrily under
the badgering' of the prosecutor.
"What you tell us Is very interesting,
the latter was saying sarcastically. "And
so you followed the life of the defendant,
or let us say you traced her life back
year by year. And did you decide which
event was the direct cause of her er-
peculiar mental breakdowns?"
