Romance is Not Dead Even in the
Staid Business Life of This City
rld you ever hear of really and truly
romance In the cabaret, outside of ma (ra
tine fiction?
Hero la one that rlvsls the nlght-lifo
sob schemers, and It happened right In
Omaha.
"Jerry" McQee. well known to the sun
dodgers, is a blithe young modern min
strel who earns a living by delighting the
hlgh-eteppers with the latest ballads and
comedy rag-time and tin-pan alley,
Gotham. He Is the hero.
The heroine Is a shy young country
maiden, who. In defense of desperate
loneliness, recently wsndered into the
cabaret.
"Take the little road without a turn
ing that leads to home sweet home,"
Jerry was singing. The sentiment of the
ballad was lost In the staccato laughter
Jibes of the merry-makers, but the
, one-step sir was being moat en-'l
thuaiaatlcally danced and hummed. Of
ray company, perhaps only one
caught the sentiment of the wor!s.

Proposed Cat in South Side Poital

proved. ;i IMPROVEMENT CLUB TO ACT
The decision of the "efficiency commit
tee" sent from Wsahlngton to Investigate
and economize If possible the cost of
postal carrier service In Omaha, to recom
mend to Postmaster General Burleson a
cut In the mall carrier force of five men
and the transfer of all territory in the
city south of Drexel street to the city
limits In the Maple avenue district, has
aroused considerable complaint among
cltlsens of the South Side and the af
fected district as well. The Southeast
Improvement club of the South Side Is
up In arms and plans to circulate peti
tions and request congressmen to head
off action on th recommendations until
a comprehensive report of the matter
has been made.
In the report of the committee an
nounced Saturday, it is recommended
that five carriers be taken from the
force, two of which will come from the
South Side. The other recommendation Is
that rural service be adopted south of
Drexel street In the South Side. This
would mean that but one delivery would
be made each day to residents within
the city limits, that no delivery would
be made on a holiday and that boxes
must be erected on every fence or spe
cially sunk post abridging the street or
roadway. J
ResldenU bitterly object to this reduc
tion In efficiency merely for an economic
benefit bringing forth the argument that
the service la poor enough as It Is. A
move' of the same kind on the part of the
"efficiency committee" sent direct from
the national capital wag checked by Lin
coln resident through their congress
