side, and my Iron men are going down
on Mor&n'a end, because I think his right
IS better than the right of the Jones
entry.
Tough betting, though. Tou know the
old dope Is to string along with a champ
until he blows, and ten-round quarrels
seldom make champs.
The boys up on Broadway have every
sort of dope on the fight. Pome say that
me," said Ike. "Furthermore, I'm busy
as a newspaper guy. I ain't got much
time to monkey with fltrhters. But I'll
tell you what 1 11 do. I ll try to get a
bout for you at a fair price. I'll ehow
you how it Is done. Watch me closely.
Afterward you can go on handling your
self, using my system."
Well, Ike approached Billy Cllbson, man
ager for Jim Coffey, and boldly declared
that Frank Moran could whalo'the con
ciouenesa out of th scrapper with the
beverage name; - This vexed Gibson, who
forthwith rushed to all the newspapers
and declared that Coffey could beat up
any person In the wide, wide world.
Ike influenced Moran to visit var'ous
newspaper shops to deny the truth of
Gibson assertion and very .soon after
ward Jimmy Johnson, promoter, sought
out Moran and Coffey and wanted to
match them, up at hla own figures. J
, Johnson bffered Moran a sum In keep
ing with the amounts previously earned
by Moran. The blond battler we on the
point of , accepting, when Ike ' . Dorgan
loomed up in .the offing, loomed of John
son's offer, and said:
"Nix, nix, Jimmy; this boy Moran
fight for a certain percentage or he don't
fight at all."
Johnson demurred but Ike wa ob
durate. Th public demanded a Coffey
Moran bout and rather than let some
other promoter grab it, Johnson reluc
tantly met the demand of Ike Dorgan.
Moran' hare for that firt Coffey fight
waa $6,900, and when the money was
placed in the hand of Moran he promptly
fainted. i
Dorgan wanted to cult and return to hl
newspaper work, but Moran would not
listen to that idea. '
