The Times' military correspondent, analyzing: the situation around Verdun, de clares bis belief that the long ex pected big German offensive has be gun, although he doubts whether Verdun is to be the real point of the attack. He further' declares that no front Is impenetrable in the face ot a modern artillery attack, but he be lieves that the allies' cue Is "keep cool, to be avaricious in depleting the main reserves and to keep in creasing those reserves for action when the Germans have exhausted themselves." The writer'g belief that the Germans are preparing to launch their main attack at some point other than Verdun is supported as follows: "What the Germans hop for is to attack the bulk of the allies' reserve, cast of the Meuse, making an im mense clatter thero, and the next German blow from the northwest probably awaits 4 the fulfillment of this desire. The French appear to have met the Verdun attack with re serves Just sufficient to maintain the conflict. There is no sign that Gen eral Joffre has yet drawn upon or even moved his main forces."
