Scott, assistant rate clerk of the Public
Utilities commission of Kansas, has been
going over the records of the State Rail
way commission with -the view of se
curing data so that the commission of
Kansas may frepare and put In force a
rate order similar to the celebrated rate
order No. IS, which caused so much con
troversy In Nebraska.
The State Railway commission has Just
completed and sent to Congressman
' Charles Soal, at Washington, at his re
quest, a statement of the condition of
the freight car business In Nebraska for
the past three years, and including busi
ness so far Into 1316.
The report thows that previous to this
year the freight car supply of the com
bined roads in this state averaged per
day about 1,800 cars, and that at the same
time there were orders for 2,000 cars.
This year the average number of cars
of the roads were 1,400, with orders for
1,800.

employ of a local cement firm, escaped
death very closely this afternoon when
he was burled under an avalanche of
cement In sacks, weighing more than a
ton. ,
Workmen ruehed to his relief, but out
side of a fractured shoulder, he escaped
injury.
When pulled out he was lying under-
neath tha entire load.

dates were Initiated here Sunday by tho
Knights of Columbus. The initiatory ser
vices were followed by a banquet at
Morse Hall in the evening at which
plates for 300 were laid. Young women
of St. Patrick's church served the ban
quet. Right Reverend Bishop J. Henry
Tlhen of Lincoln was the principal
speaker. He spoke on the subject,
"Knighthood of Our Day." Hugh J. Boyie
of O'Neill responded to the toasts,
"Knighthood and the State." J. Q. Wid
helm of Fremont was toastmaster, Joe
Steelier and his brother, Anton, disap
pointed the Knights when they failed
to show up for Initiation. The Stechf-r
party left Sunday for a trip through tho
weMern states and waa unable to be
here to take the degree work. Knights
were In attendance from all parts of the
state. . '
For a time after they were married
they made their home with Williams'
mother, who resides on a large farm near
Schaupps, Neb.
YOUNG BUFFALO COUNTY

the funeral services and Interment were
at Humboldt. She waa a daughter of
Joseph Hays, and grew to womanhood
at the Hays' farm, four miles east of
Table Rock, and was married in 1881, to
Alex MoCllntock. Burvlvlng her are her

aged was 64 years.

MEN WHO SOLD DISEASED
STOCK REFUND MONEY
HAY SPRINGS, Neb., Feb. 28. (Spe
cial.) Considerable excitement has been
occasioned here by reason of some stock
cows that were shipped In here from
Sioux City and sold to local stockmen,
which proved to be tubercular. The party
who sold them' did not escape, but was
later picked up by the sheriff at Rush
vllle and was compelled to give up '.he
proceeds of the ' sale in the shape of
drafts. By some loophole of the Inspec
tion, several carloads of this diseased
stock has been shipped In here, but
fortunately the discovery was made In
time for the purchasers of this stock to
get their money back. This stock is pre
sumably from Wisconsin and Minnesota,
cows for some reason were not fit for
further use as dairy cows. It la a shame
that northwest Nebraskans, the produe
ers of 'the best range stock of the United
States, if not in the world, can not be
saved by state or government inspection
from the importation Into this section of
diseased and Inferior cattle. Action, no
doubt, will be taken, but possibly too
late.
